POULTRY INDUSTRY IN INDIA
The poultry industry is one of the fastest growing sectors, The Indian poultry market was
valued at INR 1,905.3 billion in 2022 and it is expected to grow at a rate of 10.18% during
2023-2028.
The Indian Poultry Industry has undergone a paradigm shift in structure and operation. A
very significant feature of the Indian poultry Industry is its transformation from a mere
backyard activity into a major commercial activity. In short,
• The Indian poultry industry is booming and emerging as the world's 2nd largest market.
• The poultry industry in India is constantly on the rise, as they don’t shy away from
adopting modern techniques to improve their farms.
POULTRY LITTER – A CHALLENGE
As the sector is growing, there is an increase in the waste produced, one of the major wastes
is “Poultry Litter”, which contains the bedding material and bird droppings. Althoughlarge
quantities of poultry litter are being produced in poultry farms, there are very limited disposal
options, and these are very costly ones.

Biogas Project Proposal
• Poultry wastes are posing serious environmental pollution problems,
• Their bad odorous attract fly and rodent breeding, resulting in diseases to the
birds-thus affecting the productivity of the farm.
• It also causes some general environmental and public health- related issues like air
pollution and water pollution.
Early disposal of wastes with a well-organized method can help in poultry waste
management, for healthy and profitable poultry farming activity.
AMBIENT CONDITIONS – NEEDED FOR THE BIRDS
The climate in poultry houses influences the well-being and health of humans as well as birds.
Respiratory, digestive, and behavioral disorders are more likely to occur in houses in which the
climatic conditions are not up to standard. To maintain optimal conditions in the farmhouse
air blowers and coolers need to be installed and to run this equipment, an exhaustive amount
of power is required, but the power supply from the grid is not constant, and thus dependency
on alternative power supply like diesel gensets.

ENERGY PRODUCTION FROM POULTRY LITTER
There are many different methods to dispose off poultry litter, and one of the most profitable of
them is the Biomethation of the poultry litter.
Biomethation is a process by which poultry litter is microbiologically converted under anaerobic
conditions to produce biogas and bio-slurry.
Particulars Composition
Methane: 55-60%
Carbon dioxide: 35-40%
Hydrogen Sulphide: ~ 500 ppm
Based upon estimates, with the country’s poultry population of 28.6 million and availability
of poultry waste of 1,575.5 million kg per year, the biogas yield would be 116.6 million
m3/year. This can generate 648 GWh of thermal energy per year. If the thermal energy is
converted into electric energy, assuming a 15 percent conversion loss in the conversion of
thermal energy to electric energy, approximately 550 GWh of electric energy can be
obtained annually.

PROJECT DETAILS
Based on the requirement of the client, for setting up of biogas plant for the optimal utilization
of the available poultry litter waste of 1.2 lakh birds to produce gas for clean cooking, power
generation, and bio-manure through a turnkey model.
Project Components
With the available waste, we propose to set up a biogas plant with the following
parameters,
The capacity of the Power production Biogas production Bio-manure
Plant (m3) (kWh/ day) equivalent to LPG (kg/day)
1000 1500 400 1600
KEY FAVOURABLE FACTORS OF THE PROJECT
• Everyday litter management i.e., no storage space is required and reduces dispose-off
expenses.
• Proper hygiene and sanitation on the premises of the poultry farm.
• The productivity of the birds is increased as the possibility of infections due to litter
is reduced.
• A biogas unit converts the gas into power, reducing the dependency of the farm
on the grid for electricity.
• Also, provide clean cooking gas as an alternative to LPG/firewood to the staff of the
farm. Biogas unit provides.
a good quality nutrient-rich organic manure rich in N, P, K, which can be sold to the
farmers, nurseries, horticulture department, etc.,
• The Manure can be further processed to value-added products like PROM.

BIO SLURRY TO PROM
The slurry obtained from the anaerobic digestion of the poultry litter, it is a natural fertilizer that
can bind soil nutrients and loosen hard soil. Due to the processing in biogas, it causes bio-slurry to
be a fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen compared to phosphorus and potassium. Also, bio-slurry has
probiotic microbes that can increase soil fertility so that it impacts the quality and quantity of the
harvest.
Slurry Type Nitrogen(%) Phosphorus(%) Potash(%)
Digested Slurry 1.5 – 2.0 1.0 1.0
Vermicompost 0.5-1.5 0.1 – 0.30 0.15 – 0.56
Cow Dung 1.19 0.3 0.48
Biogas Project Proposal
The Bio slurry can further be processed to Phosphate Rich Organic Manure, which is a
type of fertilizer used as an alternative to diammonium phosphate (DAP) and single
superphosphate.
Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM) is a value-added product produced by co-
compositing high-grade rock phosphate in fine size with biogas slurry of Cow Dung, Poultry
litter, food waste, organic matter collected from various sources, etc. Phosphate
Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) is added to improve efficiency.
PROM - BENEFITS
1. Contains three nutrients.
• Phosphorous
• Organic carbon
• Nitrogen
2. Acts as an alternative to DAP and makes soil soft and enriched with nutrients for a long time.
3. Provides micro-nutrients like cobalt, copper, and zinc along with primary nutrients.
4. PROM is very effective as phosphatic fertilizer even in saline soils where
DAP completely failed.
5. The use of PROM will reduce the cost of fertilization to the farmers and will also
result in the conservation of phosphate minerals, a non-renewable resource
dueto the high residual effect.
