AIM: To equip students with the knowledge of solar panels, inverter and to teach students how
to install solar photovoltaic system.

THEORY
Solar Energy harnessed from the sun radiates energy, it is a sustainable renewable source of
power with vast potential for addressing the World’s growing energy needs while derived from
the sun and has been harnessed for various purpose throughout human history. In recent
decades, solar energy has gained significant prominence as a sustainable and environmentally
friendly source of electricity.
Sunlight are converted to electricity by a process known as Photovoltaic effect. The
photovoltaic effect is seen in the photovoltaic cell which is the main stronghold of a solar panel.
When photons from sunlight dislodge electrons from the atoms within the photovoltaic
material, it generates electricity.
During installation of solar panels as arranged in four (4) ways which aids in either
increasing current and leaving voltage the same or increasing voltage and leaving current same.
The four ways include;
Series connection: involves increasing the voltage and leaving the current the same
Parallel connection: Involves increasing current and leaving the voltage to be the same
Other ways include;
 Series-parallel connection
 Parallel-series connection
Solar Panel efficiency explains the amount of usable electricity given by the solar panels.

EQUIPMENT AND QUANTITY

SN EQUIPMENT QUANTITY
1 Solar PV panel (18V, 40W) 1

2 PWM charge controller(24V, 3A) 1

3 Battery (12V, 18A) 1

4 Inverter (1000VA) 1

5 2.5mm connection wire 3 yards

PROCEDURE
1. After successful transportation of solar components and materials to the site, arrange
and wire the photovoltaic panel according to the required need, then mount the PV
panel on preferred location. The solar array is best placed perpendicular to the sun’s
ray.
2. Connect the charge controller directly from the output terminals of the solar PV using
lighter gage wire.
3. Connect the battery to the charge controller at the port selected in solar charger
controller (batteries are properly connected in series or parallel connection)
4. Connect the battery terminal to the inverter with 2.5mm cable.
5. Finally, from the inverter, connect to external loads

OBSERVATION
It was observed that the panel had to be tilted at an angle between 30 – 40 degrees, to get
more sunlight exposure. Solar system didn’t work when a connection was misplaced during the
installation process.

PRECAUTION
1. Tools were handled with utmost care
2. Naked and loose wires were avoided in order to avoid electric shock and accident
3. Ensured all systems were turned off before beginning work to prevent injuries and
damage to the equipment.
4. All personal protective equipments (PPE) were worn during the installation process for
safety
5. Appropriate tools and materials were used for the job, such as insulated tools and the
correct type of wire.
6. All connections were properly checked and confirmed secured before testing
7. Test was run on all appliances to determine the rating and compatibility.
8. Ensured the rating of the inverter was the same as the PV array.

CONCLUSION
The installation was a successful one and worked efficiently as intended. It reduced the
dependence on one single source and increased the reliability. Apparently, we can improve the
efficiency of the system with an individual interest mode of generation. Photovoltaic systems
are cost effective, pollution free and maintenance free. They could be deployed in remote
locations where conventional power is not really available.
