This placement test includes a total of one hundred multiple-choice items: 50 grammar and 50 vocabulary questions
which are arranged to become progressively more difficult. Students should complete the test independently without the
help of any kind in 60 minutes or less. The scores below are meant as a rough guide to determine
student levels:

4. Writing assessment
Students’ levels and needs can be determined more accurately if the placement test is accompanied by a writing or
speaking assessment - ideally both. This also highlights if students have a "spiky" profile - for example, confident and
effective speakers whose accuracy or writing skills need improvement, or vice-versa. Printable ideas for a writing
assessment are included in this worksheet.
The writing assessment can either be done under timed conditions (~15 minutes) or taken away and completed in the
students’ own time, with no outside assistance. The advantage of this type of assessment is that it’s a

permanent record of student-generated language which can be examined in the teachers’ own time, and even kept for
comparison with future work from the student as a demonstration of progress. For a level assessment, it may not be
worth correcting all the errors or returning the corrected text to the student - the purpose of this task is to provide
additional evidence for the teacher to determine the students’ level. However, you can provide feedback if you want to,
and a corrected text may be a good basis for a first lesson.
There is a Speaking Level Placement Test available elsewhere on this website. Alternatively, these more generic speaking
questions can suit any level:
- Tell me about yourself. (If the student requires further prompts, ask for information about their family, their job or
studies, their free time activities, or their home and hometown.)
- Why are you learning English?
- What are your plans for the future? (If the student requires further prompts, ask them what they think they will be
doing next year/in 5 years/in 10 years.)
The assessment should take ~10-15 minutes. As you assess the student’s level, it’s helpful to consider these things.
- How well they understood the questions - this provides an indication of their listening level as well.
- The range and accuracy of the vocabulary and grammar they used in their answers.
- Their pronunciation.
These questions can be useful for assessing student level, following completion of the Quick Level Placement Test. Start
by asking some of the easier questions in one level, or even with the level below your student’s test level. If the student
is able to answer with confidence and accuracy, increase the level of difficulty. The assessment should take ~10-15
minutes. As with any speaking assessment, it’s helpful to consider these things.
- How well they understood the questions - this provides an indication of their listening level as well.
- The range and accuracy of the vocabulary and grammar they used in their answers.
- Their pronunciation.
