a. i. List two factors affecting electrical resistance of a conductor. (1 mark)

b. A battery of e.m.f 12 V and internal resistance of 1.2 Ω is connected to an external load of
resistance 4.0 Ω. Calculate the current in the circuit. (2 marks)
c. Given a soft iron bar and a bar magnet only, describe how you would convert the iron to a
magnet. (3 marks)
d. i. List four uses of X-ray other than in medicine (2 marks)
ii. Mention two examples of force field other than electric field (1 mark)
QUESTION 2
a. An electron of charge 1.60 x 10-19 C is accelerated under a potential difference of 1.0 x 105 V.
Calculate the energy of the electron in joules. (3 marks)
b. A particle of charge 6 C released from rest in a uniform electric field E moves a distance
of 5 cm. If its kinetic energy is 4 x 10-3 J, calculate the:
i. work done by the electric field; (2 marks)
ii. potential at its initial position; (2 marks)
iii. magnitude of the electric field intensity. (2 marks)
c. Differentiate between primary cells and secondary cells with two examples each. (3 marks)
d. (i) Explain the terms Electromotive force and terminal p.d. (3 marks)
(ii) Name the two advantages which a lead-acid accumulator has over a primary cell. (2 marks)

a. i. Calculate the length of a constantan wire of diameter 0.6 mm and resistivity 1.1 x 10-6Ωm
required to construct a standard resistor of resistance 35Ω. (3 marks)
ii. What is dielectric? (1 mark)
b. A battery of three cells in series, each of e.m.f 2 V and internal resistance 0.5 Ω is connected to
a 2Ω resistor in series with a parallel combination of two 3Ω resistors. Draw the circuit diagram
and calculate: (2 marks)
i. the effective external resistance. (3 marks)
ii. the current in the circuit. (3 marks)
iii. the lost volts in the battery. (2 marks)
c. (i) Define gravitational potential (2 marks)
(ii) State the Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation. (2 marks)
d. A bar magnet is dipped into iron fillings and removed, state:
i. At what point(s) on the magnet will the fillings be concentrated (1 mark)
ii. A reason for your answer in (i) (2 marks)

a. i. State two advantages of potentiometer over voltmeter in measuring the e.m.f of a cell. (2 marks)
ii. A parallel plate capacitor consists of two plates each of area 9.6 x 10−2m2, separated by a
dielectric of thickness 2.25 x 10−3 and dielectric constant 900. Calculate the capacitance of
the capacitor. [ εo = permittivity of free space = 8.85 x 10−12Fm−1] (2 marks)
b. i. State three factors that affect the capacitance of a capacitor. (3 marks)
ii. What is a force field? (1 mark)
c. Two spherical balls each of mass 6kg are placed 3m apart. Calculate the magnitude of the
force of attraction between them. [G = 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2kg-2] (2 marks)
d. Calculate the value of the resistance R required to convert the above galvanometer into a
voltmeter with full range deflection of 15v. (2 marks)

a. A current of 2 A is passed through a platinum voltammeter for 50 minutes. Calculate the:
i. Mass of platinum deposited on the cathode. (2 marks)
ii. Volume of the metal deposited (2 marks)
[Electrochemical equivalent of platinum 5 x 10-2 gC2, Density of platinum = 21.5gcm-3]
b. The plates of a parallel plate capacitor are 4mm apart in vacuum and 0.2m2 in area. If a
potential difference of 200V is applied across the capacitor, calculate:
i. Capacitance of the capacitor (2 marks)
ii. Electric intensity between the plates [ℰo = 8.85 x 10-12 Fm-1] (2 marks)
iii. State two applications of a capacitor. (2 marks)
c. State one
i. Difference between primary cell and accumulator. (2 marks)
ii. Similarity between primary cell and accumulator. (2 marks)
d.
A battery of negligible internal resistance is connected to a set of resistors as illustrated in
the circuit diagram above. Determine the equivalent resistance of the circuit. (2 marks)
