Assignment Brief and Guidance

Scenario 1:

You are employed as an Electrical Design Engineer at East Coast College in the Estates department.
You are made In-charge of the installation of electrical power systems and PLCs in tower building. In
this process, your Chief Engineer has supplied you with some electrical circuit diagrams that require
your detailed analysis. He requested that you fully document your methods and results in a report.

Part A:
1. A current of 13∠22.610 𝐴 flows in an electrical system which is powered with a sinusoidal source of
150 + 𝑗220) 𝑉. Using Complex number theory, calculate (a) True Power, (b) Reactive Power, and (c) the
Apparent Power. Finally, show all the powers on a Power Triangle.

2. Explain the Maximum Power Transfer Theorem using Thevenin’s equivalent circuit using complex
impedances (i.e., Source internal resistance and Load). Show in your explanation all the conditions of
power transfer in Thevenin’s equivalent circuit. (Guided word count: 300 words).

Part B:

1. (a) A 110Ω resistor, a 0.02H inductor and a capacitor of 1.20𝜇𝐹 in parallel with a circuit made up of a
120Ω resistance in series with a 2.40𝜇𝐹 capacitor. A supply of 240V, 60Hz is connected to the circuit.
Draw the circuit diagram with the given parameters. Calculate the total current taken from the supply and
its phase angle. (NOTE: Use Complex numbers while solving).

(b) In the circuit shown below, the voltage between the points A and B is 50∠68.130 𝑉. Calculate the
(i)Supply current 𝐼𝑠 , (ii) Total impedance of the network 𝑍𝑇 , (iii) Supply voltage 𝑉𝑠 , (iv) Phase Angle (v)
Voltage across the points B and C, and (vi) finally the value of the currents 𝑖1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖2 and use the current

divider rule to check the values of 𝑖1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖2 . (NOTE: Use Complex numbers while solving).

2. (a) In a Series and Parallel RLC circuits, explain resonance frequency, voltage and current at resonance
condition, dynamic resistance, and Q-factor with relevant formulas and phasor diagrams. (Guided word
count: 300 words).

(b) A coil of inductance 0.25H and resistance 80Ω is connected in parallel with a 20µF across a 20V
variable frequency supply. Calculate the following: (i) Resonant frequency. (ii) Dynamic resistance. (iii)
Current at resonance (iv) the circuit Q-factor at resonance condition.

3. A 20µF capacitor is connected in series with a 50KΩ resistor, and the circuit is energized with a 20V, d.c
supply. Determine: (a) Initial value of the current flowing (b) Time constant of the circuit (c) Value of the
current one second after connection (d) Value of the capacitor voltage two seconds after connection (e)
The time after the connection when the resistor voltage is 15V (f) The value of the capacitor voltage two
seconds after 5-time constants.

Scenario 2:
You are employed as an Electronics Design Engineer at East Coast Instrumentation Systems PLC. The
Sales Engineer has a limited understanding of electronics. So that he has better knowledge to inform
potential customers, he requested you to use your expertise to provide some detailed information on the
uses of Digital and Analogue electronics and a range of electronic devices used for Analogue and Digital
electronic circuits.
