Rhythm

Music cannot happen without time. The placement of the sounds in time is the rhythm of a piece
of music. Because music must be heard over a period of time, rhythm is one of the most basic
elements of music. In simpler terms, rhythm means time taken of sound or silence of the note. In
other words rhythm means note value.

The following are the names of the common notes or rhythms:

1. Whole note or Semi breve

2. Half note or minim
3. Quarter note or crotchet
4. Eighth note or quaver
5. Sixteenth note or semi quaver
6. Thirty-second note or demi-semi quaver
7. Sixty-fourth note or hemi-demi semi quaver

Structure of some notes and their rests symbols:

Dotted and tied notes
A dot (.) placed after a note extends its time value by half the time of the note. For example;

If two dots are placed after a note, the second dot adds value of the first dot.

Dots may also be placed after rests creating the same effect like when placed after notes.

A tie
A tie is a curved line which joins notes of the same pitch. A tie extends the value of the first note
by adding the value of the note to which it is tied. e.g.
