It is essential for us to have a look in the
past history of physical education in
India, if we want to know regarding
career aspects in the field of physical
education. Before 1900 A.D., there were
very few opportunities about the career
in physical education.
CAREER OPTIONS IN PHYSICAL
EDUCATION
Mainly, there are two types of career options
in the field of physical education. The first
type of career options are related to
teaching and coaching of physical education.
These are called traditional careers in
physical education.
Teaching Career in Physical
Education
Physical education has traditionally been considered a
professional field appropriate only for those interested in
teaching career. The teaching career offers many rewards to
the teachers whether they are engaged in elementary schools,
middle schools, high schools, senior secondary schools, colleges
or universities.

Coaching Career in Physical
Education
educators prefer to opt for coaching as a career.
There are a number of job opportunities for coaching
as in the field of teaching. Many coaches want a dual
career as a teacher and coach, whereas others
desire solely to coach. Opportunities to coach exist in
both, the school and non-school setting.
Health Related Careers
During the last twenty years, there has been a rapid
increase in the awareness of health. Nowadays,
people have become more health conscious. They want
to be healthy and fit. They want to keep away from
the various diseases, such as hypertension, heart
diseases and disorders like obesity and diabetes
mellitus etc. They have realised the value of health.
Everyone wants to lead a healthy lifestyle. That is
why, health related career opportunities in the field
of physical education have expanded in recent years.
Administration Related Careers
Owing to increased sports participation and sports related
business, there is a need for individuals trained in sports
management. Now administration related career opportunities
are available in various fields, such as sports administration,
management of sports clubs and facilities, sports marketing
and promotion etc.

Performance Related Careers
Performance related careers are as follows:
(a) As Players.
(b) As Officials.
Careers in Communication Media
The communication media i.e., television, radio,
newspapers and magazines, etc. have
contributed to the enhancement of various
career opportunities in sports communication.
(a) Sports Journalism.
(b) Book Writing.
(c) Sports Photography.
(d) Book Publishing.
(e) Sports Broadcasting.
Marketing Career
Increasing interest of public in sports and games,
health, fitness and physical activities has stimulated
the sales of sports goods. Consequently, job
opportunities in marketing and selling sports
equipments have increased. Private companies need
persons with an understanding of physical activities.
Sports Industry
Careers are also available in sports
industry. A person, who wants a career in
sports industry, must have the knowledge of
physical education and sports. One may
establish a sports industry at a small scale.
Sports Software Engineer
Career options are available as sports software
engineer. A sport software engineer is a part of
the game creation process, including
architectural design, debugging and working on
complex problems with designers, artists and
other engineers etc.
Conclusion
Many career options have been discussed in this
chapter but still, there are many careers in the
field of physical education which can be created.

Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS)
As a result of declining standard as well as
performance of India in Olympic Games, an Adhoc Inquiry
Committee was constituted in 1958
To Provide Sports Scholarships.
Organisation of National Sports Talent Competitions.
National Physical Health Scheme.
Progress of Indigenous Games and Martial Arts.
International Olympic Committee
(IOC)
The International Olympic Committee is the governing
body of the modern Olympic games. It is committed to
support and promote participation in sports
throughout the world.
Members of the Committee
International Olympic Committee consists of members
from the various countries, which constitutes
president, vice presidents, executive board and
secretary general. The description of these members
is mentioned below:
President
The president of the IOC is elected by its members.
The president is elected for a term of eight years.
After the expiry of his term, he can be re-elected
again. The current IOC president is Jacques Rogge.
Vice-Presidents
In the IOC four vice-presidents are elected. These
officials are also elected by members of the
committee. They are elected for a term of four
years. They can be reappointed if members of the
committee like so.
Executive Board
The IOC Executive Board consists of the president, four vice-
presidents and ten other members. All the members of IOC
Executive Board are elected by the IOC session. (All the
members of IOC from various countries) in a secret ballot, by a
majority of votes caste. The IOC executive board assumes the
general overall responsibility for the administration of the
IOC and the management of its affairs.
Main Functions of the IOC
The IOC performs a number of functions which are described below:
1. The place where the Olympics will be organised is decided by this committee.
The right to decide the days on which the games will be held also rests with
this committee.
2. For conducting the competition and general programmes for the Olympics,
fundamental rules and regulations are set up by this committee.
3. It also encourages and supports the promotion of ethics in sport as well as
education of youth through sports.
4. It also ensures the regular celebration of the Olympic games.
5. It takes action in order to strengthen the unity and to protect the
independence of the Olympic movement.
6. It also acts against any form of discrimination affecting the Olympic
Movement.
7. It encourages and supports the promotion of women in sports at all levels.
8. It leads the fight against doping in sport.
9. It encourages the development of sport for all.
10. It opposes any political or commercial abuse of sport and athletes.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA)
Indian Olympic Association was established in 1927/Sir
Dorabji Tata and Dr. Noehren became the founder President
and Secretary General respectively of Indian Olympic
Association. It is affiliated to International Olympic
Committee
Aims and Objectives of National
Institute of Sports
The main aims of National Institute of Sports are mentioned below:
1. To prepare coaches for specific training of different sports.
2. To raise the technical standard of coaches.
3. To make available the latest knowledge in the field of sports.
4. To help in searching the talented sportspersons in sports.
5. To impart proper training to the sportspersons participating in International competitions.
6. To organize compeitions and seminars in the field of sports.
7. To give scholarships to sportspersons so that they could be inspired towards sports more and
more.
8. To give help to Nehru Yuvak Kendras for the promotion of sports and games.
9. To provide the technical knowledge to the industrialists involved in making sports equipments,
for preparing modern sports equipments.
10. To organise the orientation course for the teachers of physical education.
11. To help the research work in the field of sports.
12. To get published the various magazines for promotion of sports.
13. To prepare the coaches of other countries of Asia.
Sports Authority of India (SAI)
Sports Authority of India (SAI) is a registered society set up by
the Govt. of India in Jan. 1984. Govt. of India established Sports
Auhority of India for promotion of sports, exploration of sports
talent in young age and nutrition, organizing sports
competitions, providing facilities, utilising stadiums and for
maintaining them in appropriate conditions.
Schemes of Sports Authority of
India
Exploration of Sports Talent and Nutrition - There is no lack
of sports talent in India. The only problem was that the
talented sportspersons were not explored at young age.
Functions and Objectives of
Indian Olympic Association
The objectives of Indian Olympic Association are mentioned below:
Development and promotion of the Olympic movement.
2. Enforcement of all rules and regulations of the International Olympic Committee and Indian Olympic
Association.
3. To be the official organisation in complete form and whole charge of all the matters related to Olympic
event.
4. Promotion and encouragement of the physical, moral and cultural education of the young people of the
nation so that their character can be developed.
5. Admitting the membership of the state Olympic Association and national sports federation for which
submission of their annual reports and audited statement of accounts is necessary.
These documents should be deposited to the IOA for information.
6. To undertake with assistance of national sports federations the financial management, transportation,
maintenance and welfare of teams from India taking part in the Olympic Games and other games which are
organised under the patronage of IOC.
7. To take disciplinary action against any federation for misbehaviour or any other undesirable activity
bringing discredit to the country.
8. In cooperation with the national sports federation/associations organise and control selection, training,
coaching of the teams that will represent India.
9. To enforce and defend the exclusive rights of the Association to use the olympic flag and olympic insignia.
YMCA College of Physical
Education (Chennai)
YMCA College of Physical Education (Chennai) was founded by
Mr. Harry Crowe Buck in 1920 He was an American from Spring
Field College, Massachusetts who arrived in Madras in 1919. He
was a pioneer in physical education training in India.
