SCHEDULE OF TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR FELT SEALING RINGS
FOR SPHERICAL ROLLER BEARING AXLE BOXES
OF TCF TYPE COACHING STOCK
(TENTATIVE)
1.0 SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers technical requirements for felt sealing rings for spherical
roller bearing axle boxes of ICF type coaching stock.
2.0 REQUIREMENTS FOR FELT SEALING RINGS
2.1 Material
The felt shall be made from pure white sheep wool and cell wool.
2.1.1 Ingredient
The felt should be made from pure white sheep wool free from all foreign
materials and cell wool. The content of sheep wool and cell wool shall be 70%
and 30% respectively.
2.1.2 The felt rings shall be made Precision type to IS: 1719 - 2000, and shall be
proofed.
2.2 PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS
2.2.1 Density:
The density offelt shall be 0.36±10% gm/cm3 .
2.2.2 Tensile Strength
Tensile strength should be minimum of 45 kg/cm 2 when measured in the middle
of a length of 100mm on a strip 30mm wide.
2.2.3 SpliUing Resistance:
Splitting resistance should be minimum of8 kg on strips of the size mentioned in
para 2.2.2 above.

2.2.4 Elongation:
The elongation of the felt in tensile test should be minimum 65%.
2.2.5 Heat Resistance
The felt in dry condition would be raised to a temperature of 110°C in one hour
time and shall be retained at that temperature till such time constant weight of felt
is obtained and wherein it will show no evidence of deterioration.
2.2.6 Oil Absorption
The oil absorption of the felt should be 150% to 200% by weight at 20°C. The oil
absorption will be determined after soaking for 24 hours and dripping for 24
hours strips of felt of the size 8x20x120mm in warm cylinder oil to IS:1589-1960,
Type-I Grade 3 having a viscosity of 45 to 55 centistokes at 99°C or Red wood
NO.1 viscosity in seconds 188 to 230 at 99°C. The temperature of the warm
cylinder oil should be kept at 40 to 50°C for soaking the felt.
2.2.7 The chemical requirements tor telt shall be as specitied in IS: 1719 - 2000,
proofed for insect and moth resistance.
2.3 COMPRESSION RESISTANCE
2.3.1 With a pressure of 10 Kglcm2 the felt should get compressed by a maximum of
15%. After 1.5 minutes of loading the felt should restore to its original thickness
on release of the load. The felt on compression at a pressure of 100 Kglcm 2
applied instantaneously shall not show any sign of destmction.
3.0 MANUFACTURE
3.1 The telt rings shall be made as per relevant ICF drawings. The telt rings at the
joint shall be glued with Fevicol / Movicol SR or any superior glue and stitched
with waxed thread.
4.0 MARKING & PACKING
4.1 The individual felt rings shall be marked in indelible ink with batch number,
manufacturer's name, month and year of manufacture and shall be suitabl y
packed in hessian or gunny cloth so as to avoid any damage during handling and
transition.
