Lesson 1: Human Cultural Variation
Culture
• Is a complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, laws, custom and any other capabilities and
habits acquired by man as a member of the society.
Society
• Is an organized interaction among people within a defined milieu.
• Product of human interactions subscribe to the rules of their culture.
Politics
• Is an ethics applied to a group of people.
• refers to the operation of a constitutional system of government and publicly defined institutions and procedures.
Human Cultural Variation
• refers to the differences in social behaviors that different cultures exhibit around the world.
• What may be considered good etiquette in one culture may be considered bad etiquette in another.
Social Differences
1. Gender
Gender refers to social, cultural, and psychological characteristics or traits related to males and females based on
certain social contexts.
Sex refers to biological differences that distinguishes humans and other animals into two main categories: male and
female
2. Socio-economic Class
refers to a category that groups people with the similar economic, social, cultural, and political status.
3. Ethnicity
The term ethnicity is used to denote the shared culture of these groups, which includes cultural heritage, language
or dialect, religion, traditions and rituals, norms, values, beliefs, and other practices.
4. Religion
A religion is a set of beliefs and ritual practices related to symbols, which are considered as sacred.
5. Exceptionality/Non-exceptionality
Exceptionality is a concept that describes how an individual’s specific abilities and functioning—physical,
intellectual, or behavioral— are different from the established normal or typical qualities.
The concept of non-exceptionality is only used to differentiate between the exceptional ones and those that are
considered normal or ‘non-exceptional’.
6. Nationality
Nationality may simply be defined as a person’s belonging to a specific nation or nation-state.

Social phenomena are the individual, external, and social constructions that influence a person’s life and development.

Social Behavior and Definition


Phenomena
Food Taboo It is the act of prohibiting the consumption of certain food and drinks. Some food may be
prohibited during certain religious beliefs and periods (Lent, Ramadan), at certain stages of
life (pregnancy, sickness) or to certain classes of people (priests, infants).
Istambay A Filipino term for “standby’. This refers to a person who has nothing to do, or who is
jobless or lazy or someone who does not make use of his time in productive and sensible
activities
Marriage It is the legal and formal union of a man and a woman as partners in a relationship.

Political Behavior and Phenomena


In sociology, political behavior and phenomena include events through which authority, governance, and public opinion
are put into practice. A political behavior of a person or a group may be influenced by their political views, ideologies, and
levels of political participation. An example of an act of political behavior is the act of voting. Political phenomena are not
only limited to public offices as these also include how institutions like schools, churches, or companies.

Also known as the bandwagon effect, a cultural behavior is an event where certain individuals behave a certain way
merely because other persons do as well. A cultural phenomenon happens when something or someone gains
widespread popularity. However, it is noteworthy that it is not the subject that is the cultural phenomenon but rather the
process of becoming famous.

Popularity (Fan Base) Popularity is the state of being liked, admired, or supported by many people. formation of
fan bases is a clear manifestation of popularity. For instance, singers, actors and actresses,
athletes, and musical bands have their group of fans.
Social Media Buzz Facebook, Twitter. and Instagram are social networking sites where many people are
members and interact with other members through information, picture, music, and video
sharing.

Lesson 3: Social, Cultural, and Political Change


Social change is the transformation of social institutions over time.
Sources of Change in Social Change
1. Innovation- is the social creation and institutionalization of new ideas
2. Diffusion-is the spread of innovations from one social setting to another. It occurs when one group borrows something
from another group such as norms, values, food, clothing, and other innovation
3. Discoveries- when people reorganized existing elements of the world they had not noticed before or learned to see in a
new way

Political change happens when the rulers of a country lose power or when the type of governance in the country changes.
Sources of Political Change
1. Youth awareness and active participation during elections
2. Emergence of civil society group

Cultural change is the transformation of culture or the way people live.

1. Physical Environment- consists of the particular natural surroundings in which you live
2. Population movement-movement of people from one place to another
3. War and Conquest- the act of conquering a country or group of people
4. Random Events-events that are influenced by chance
5. Technology-application of scientific knowledge to the making of tools to solve specific problems

EFFECTS OF THE CHANGES IN SOCIETY


1. Change our mode of living and lifestyle- The advancement of technology enables people to live in greater security and
comfort than ever before
2. Development- It is viewed as an important indicator of the importance of the quality of life of a people in a particular
society
3. Modernization- This is the far-reaching process by which a society moves from traditional towards the characteristics of
most developed societies
