‘Aurangzeb was the greatest Mughal emperor’, I almost completely agree with this
statement because throughout Aurangzeb’s life he contributed a lot to the empire. He had
defeated all his brothers for the throne. However, perhaps in pride, or to showcase his
strength he paraded his brother’s lifeless, headless body through Delhi whilst being
strapped to an elephant. He also kept his father locked up in prison for the last 8 years of
his life. He also caused separation between the Muslims and Hindus, as he had banned
Hindu temples. Despite all of this, he was deeply religious, and he ruled by Islamic law.
He was a very dedicated emperor and a great military leader. He led his army to many
victories. During his reign, gambling, cannabis and music were banned. He avoided
drinking and drugs, which kept him quite level-headed. Throughout his life, he would live
and dress with simplicity. And by 1707, the empire had reached its greatest extent.
Other than him, 2 other emperors were Babur and Akbar. Babur was a excellent warrior,
led his great victories. He also conquered northern India. He created a library for rare
books and manuscripts. However, he didn’t create an administrative system which would
allow him to raise money for the empire. And due to his luxurious lifestyle, at the end of
his reign, in 1530, the Mughal treasuries were empty. Akbar was also a great military
leader. He made sure that all religions have a place in society. He showed determination
as a powerful emperor. He wouldn’t let anyone challenge his law, and he even removed
his foster brother from the palace’s terrace for arguing against him. He had established a
new tax system to build up huge wealth. He had great provisions for war and amazing
military skills, that led him and his armies many victories. However, due to very high levels
of intoxication, many hardships were caused for others.
Perhaps one of the worst emperors was Jahangir. At rst, he worked hard to show his
dedication to being an emperor. He had changed his name from Salim, which means safe,
to Jahangir, which means holder of the world. He introduced many new rules, to improve
his people’s lives. He had also got married to the daughter of a powerful and important
administrator, who helped him in his reign over the empire. However, throughout his reign,
he was addicted to alcohol and drugs, making him a weak emperor. He also very little
interest in warfare, and lacked determination to make sure that his laws were being acted
upon.
Overall, I think that Aurangzeb was the best emperor because he was driven, he was
determined and he was very hardworking. He was an excellent military leader and had the
qualities needed in a great emperor.
