English Ability Enhancement Course - II (Language

Communication - II)
(2019 Pattern) (CBCS) (Semester - IV)

Q1) Attempt any one of the following in about 150-200 words. [15
Marks]

a) Why did the speaker fear that there was little prospect of him getting back the
dollar in the story 'My Lost Dollar'?
In the story 'My Lost Dollar' by Stephen Leacock, the speaker fears that there is little chance of getting
back the dollar he lent to his friend Todd. This fear arises because Todd shows no signs of
remembering the loan. Despite their regular meetings and discussions, Todd never brings up the
borrowed dollar. The speaker reflects humorously on how people often forget small debts while
recalling the money they lend to others. He becomes obsessed with the idea of recovering his lost
dollar but feels too polite to remind Todd directly. This situation highlights human behavior, where small
obligations are often overlooked unintentionally. The story humorously critiques social norms and how
trivial debts are forgotten while maintaining friendships. The speaker’s internal dilemma reflects how
minor financial matters can cause disproportionate mental anguish.

b) Summarize the central idea of the poem 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy

Evening'.
The poem 'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening' by Robert Frost conveys the theme of duty versus
desire. The speaker stops to admire the peaceful, snow-covered woods but is reminded of the
responsibilities waiting for him. The beauty of the woods symbolizes tranquility and rest, while the
speaker's obligations represent the ongoing journey of life. The repeated line, 'And miles to go before I
sleep,' emphasizes the speaker’s awareness of his duties before he can rest. Frost uses simple yet
vivid imagery to highlight the allure of nature and the conflict between fulfilling responsibilities and
seeking personal peace. The poem reflects the balance between appreciating life’s beauty and
recognizing the commitments that one must honor.

Q2) Attempt any two of the following in 50-80 words. [10 Marks]

a) Write a note on content writing.

Content writing involves creating informative, engaging, and relevant content for various platforms such
as websites, blogs, and social media. It requires strong writing skills, research ability, and knowledge of
the target audience. Good content writing is clear, concise, and tailored to meet the needs of readers
while optimizing for search engines (SEO). It plays a crucial role in marketing, communication, and
information sharing in the digital world.

b) What is an agenda?
An agenda is a list of topics or activities to be discussed during a meeting or event. It provides a clear
structure and helps participants stay focused and organized. Agendas usually include the meeting’s
objectives, time allocation for each item, and the names of those leading each discussion. Having a
well-planned agenda improves efficiency, ensures all essential matters are covered, and allows for
better time management during meetings.

Q3) Attempt any two of the following in 50-80 words. [10 Marks]

a) Write the importance of soft skills and hard skills in professional life.
Soft skills and hard skills are both essential in professional life. Soft skills, such as communication,
teamwork, and problem-solving, help build positive relationships and create a collaborative work
environment. Hard skills refer to technical knowledge and expertise required to perform specific tasks.
Employers value a combination of both because soft skills improve interpersonal effectiveness, while
hard skills ensure the successful execution of job-related responsibilities.

b) Discuss the importance of setting long-term and short-term goals in your life.
Setting long-term and short-term goals is vital for personal and professional growth. Short-term goals
provide immediate focus and motivation, helping to achieve smaller milestones. Long-term goals guide
overall direction and future aspirations, allowing for strategic planning. Together, they enhance time
management, boost productivity, and foster a sense of accomplishment. Clear goals ensure that efforts
are aligned with one's vision, leading to consistent progress and success.

c) Do a SWOT analysis of your college.

SWOT Analysis of My College:

Strengths: Well-qualified faculty, modern infrastructure, and diverse academic programs.

Weaknesses: Limited industry partnerships and fewer extracurricular opportunities.
Opportunities: Expanding research facilities, collaborating with industries, and improving placement
services.
Threats: Increasing competition from other educational institutions and adapting to rapid technological
changes.

A SWOT analysis helps the college identify areas for improvement while capitalizing on strengths and
emerging opportunities.
