Advantages and Disadvantages of Distributed Databases
Advantages and Disadvantages of Distributed Databases
The advantages and disadvantages of using a distributed-database environment are described in tables 3-1 and 3-2. Multiple database locations can be a significant help in improving scalability and independent operation of geographically dispersed Teamcenter Enterprise work groups. For large Teamcenter Enterprise networks, the advantages of distributing Teamcenter Enterprise data across several databases far exceed the disadvantages. Even for an installation that is to start out small and grow, a distributed-database environment provides the most direct path for future expansion.
By separating data, administrators have more flexibility in determining the frequency and types of backups needed for different types of data. This also increases availability.
Users must be aware of the concept of database scope and where different types of data are stored. Administrators must keep the schemas of all databases synchronized and ensure that the network is configured to take optimal advantage of the distributed-database environment in terms of availability and performance. Although database backups are more flexible in a distributeddatabase environment, multiple databases add complexity to the backup process.
