Comment Adverbs (Adverbs of Manner)

Comment adverbs describe how an action is performed or the speaker's attitude toward a
statement. They modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or entire sentences.

1. Formation

Most comment adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives:

 Quick → Quickly

Exceptions:

 Good → Well (not "goodly")

2. Position in a Sentence

Comment adverbs can appear in three main positions:

A. After the Verb (Most Common)

 She speaks fluently.

 He drove carelessly.

B. Before the Main Verb

 They quickly finished the project.

 She happily accepted the offer.

C. At the Beginning or End (for Emphasis)

 Surprisingly, he passed the exam.

 She solved the problem easily.

3. Modifying Adjectives or Other Adverbs

Comment adverbs can intensify adjectives or other adverbs:

 Extremely fast (modifying an adjective)

4. Adverbs vs. Adjectives

Be careful not to confuse adverbs with adjectives:

 Adjective: She is a quick learner. (Describes "learner")
