CP 205: Railway Systems & Track Work

Technical Note: Benefits of Proposed Plinth Track

BENEFITS OF PLINTH TRACK STRUCTURE

A comparison of the two track structures is presented below in order to support the
decision-making process for progressing with the design considering one particular track
structure within the design of plain line track. When carrying out this comparison, the
continuous slab track system has been considered as a baseline, and advantages and
drawbacks of progressing with a plinth track solution have been considered in comparison
with the baseline. Please see Error! Reference source not found. for a summary of this.

Topic Advantages Remarks/ Notes
Interfaces In case of plinth type track, the gap
under the centre of the sleeper provides
a natural channel for water to flow,
effectively managing moisture and
preventing water buildup around the
sleepers. By keeping water away from -
the concrete-embedded parts of the
sleeper, which has a positive impact on
the life of track components, with

and track concrete.
Quality of The plinth track design ensures that the
Concrete concrete is placed around the sleeper
rail seats, where it is needed as per
design, which reduces the concrete
volume and thereby, improves the
quality of concrete as less amount of

common issue in traditional fully-
embedded concrete designs. By limiting
the concrete coverage to the sides of the
sleepers, the potential for uneven curing
or void formation beneath the rail seats
is minimized, ensuring a high-quality
track foundation

structural integrity of the track.

of the sleeper need to be embedded
in concrete. This allows for more
efficient concrete casting, as less
material needs to be poured and
cured compared to a fully
embedded slab. In contrast, the full
slab requires the entire sleeper to
be embedded in concrete, which
increases the amount of concrete
that must be placed, cured, and
compacted.
b. Plinth track fosters Faster
Construction without
compromising the integrity and
longevity of the track structure,
which is vital for urban metro
systems requiring timely project
delivery.
c. The plinth-type track construction is
foreseen to be ~25% faster to
construct than the slab track. For
example, building 1 Tkm of slab
track usually takes around 66 days,
whereas the plinth-type track can
be completed in under 50 days.
d. The rear-works such as removal of
spilled concrete from sleeper is also
considerably reduced (by approx.
30%) thereby supporting the house-
keeping and concrete repair
activities.

a raised concrete level or voids
below rail seats, a bending moment
develops at centre. This is
problematic because standard
prestressed concrete (PC) sleepers
are designed with a focus on load
bearing at rail seat rather than at
centre.
b. Increased Vibration: In case of
plinth track, the hollow core
between the plinths and under the
sleeper act as a dissipation medium
(same as ballast) which support in
reducing the noise generated by the
wheel and rail interaction.

Ease of The replacement of PC sleeper in case

Replacement of derailment or any other issue is quite
easier in the case of Plinth as compared
-
to slab track as the area of concrete to
be broken and refurbished is lesser in
case of plinth type track.
