PS#2 Thermo I 1401 Sem2

The document is a problem set for a Thermodynamics I course at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, detailing various thermodynamic problems related to ideal gases, piston-cylinder devices, and refrigerants. It includes questions on work done during gas expansion, pressure and temperature changes, and specific calculations involving different substances. The problems are designed to assess students' understanding of thermodynamic principles and their application in real-world scenarios.

Problem Set #2
Quiz#2: Monday 1402/1/21 (in TA Class)

An ideal gas at a given state expands to a fixed final volume first at constant pressure and
1 then at constant temperature. For which case is the work done greater?
A balloon behaves so the pressure is P=C2V1/3 where C2=100 kPa/m. The balloon is blown

up with air from a starting volume of 1 m3 to a volume of 3 m3. Find the final mass of the
air, assuming it is at 25oC, and the work done by the air.

3 A piston-cylinder device contains 0.05 m3 of a gas initially at 200 kPa. At this state, a linear
spring that has a spring constant of 150 kN/m is touching the piston but exerting no force on
it. Now heat is transferred to the gas, causing the piston to rise and to compress the spring until the
volume inside the cylinder doubles. If the cross-sectional area of the piston is 0.25 m2, determine
(a) the final pressure in the cylinder, (b) the total work done by the gas, and
(c) the fraction of this work done against the spring to compress it.

4 A piston-cylinder device with a set of stops contains 10 kg of

refrigerant-134a. Initially, 8 kg of the refrigerant is in liquid form, and R-134a
the temperature is -8oC. Now heat is transferred slowly to the refrigerant until m=10 kg
T1= -8oC
the piston hits the stops, at which point the volume is 400 L. Determine (a) the
temperature when the piston first hits the stops and (b) the work done during Vapor
this expansion process. Also (c) show the process on a P-V diagram. Liquid

5 Ammonia in a piston-cylinder device is at 700 kPa and 80oC. It is now

cooled at constant pressure to saturated vapor (state 2) at which point the Po
piston is locked with a pin. The cooling continues to -10oC (state 3). (a) Find
the work performed and (b) show the process on P-v and T-v diagrams. Water

6 A 10-m-high cylinder, with a cross-sectionalo area of 0.1 m , has a
massless piston at the bottom with water at 20 C on top of it. Air at 300
K, with a volume of 0.3 m3, under the piston is heated so that the piston moves Air
up, spilling the water out over the side. Determine (a) the air temperature, and
(b) the work done by air when all the water has been pushed out

7 A frictionless piston-cylinder device contains 2 kg of nitrogen at 100 kPa and 300 K.

Nitrogen is now compressed in a polytropic process with n=1.4 until it reaches a final
temperature of 360 K. Calculate the work input during this process.

8 A spring-loaded piston-cylinder device contains R-134a at 20oC, 24% quality with a volume
50 L. The setup is heated and thus expands, moving the piston. It is noted that when the last
drop of liquid disappears the temperature is 40oC. The heating is stopped when temperature reaches
130oC. Verify that final pressure is about 1200 kPa by iteration and find work
done in the process. Also show process on a P-V diagram.

9 A mass of 5 kg of saturated water is in a piston-cylinder device at 100

kPa. Initially, 2 kg of the water is liquid and the rest is vapor. Heat is now Water
m=5 kg
transferred to water, and the piston, which is resting on a set of stops, starts
moving when the pressure inside reaches 200 kPa. Heat transfer continues until Vapor
the total volume increases by 20 percent. Determine (a) the initial and final Liquid
temperatures, (b) the mass of liquid water when the piston first starts moving,
and (c) the work done during this process. Also (d) show the process on a P-V diagram.
