While a small boy of six years old, Joel allowed a dog to kill one of his father’s sheep. It made
Taurai so angry that he chased Nandi and her two children from his kraal. There was nowhere for
her to go. She was forced to return to her own people. Joel hated his mother’s people, the Tonga.
However, he worked hard looking after their goats and herd of cattle. One day his herd was
attacked by a black mamba. During the struggle, a prized black bull was killed. This was the
king’s favourite bull. Joel, then aged thirteen, bravely attacked and killed the snake.
The Tonga chief called Joel to his kraal and told him that he had heard of his bravery. He gave
him a goat as a reward. This made Joel happy but he still suffered from the sneers and cruel taunts
of the other boys who called him “fatherless”. This made him feel unwanted by everybody.

I had a toothache. The pain was like the ticking of a clock through my jaw. I had

I was too big a coward to visit the dentist. At last I could bear it no longer. I visited a dentist and
when I arrived there, I was told by his nurse to sit down in the waiting room. I selected a
magazine from the table and looked through it in order to hide my fear from the other patients

“Will you come this way?” said the nurse.
Feeling like a lamb being led to the slaughter, I followed her into the surgery and sat down in the

Many thanks for your letter. I enjoyed reading about your visit to Hwange Game Reserve.

I spent the first week of the holiday at Matopo Hills. My father drove me there. I then visited my
uncle who lives on a farm near a railway siding called Chemhuru. During my stay, I saw some
rhinos in the nearby game park. They came close to the fence and were often fed oranges by
visitors.

I returned home last Monday. My uncle accompanied me as far as the siding and my father met
me at the station. Since Monday, I have been working on my school project. I am saving all my
pocket money because I want to pay my uncle another visit. I have been helping my mother with

An Englishman living near Sheffield had the most unlucky day’s fishing. He was standing on a
low bridge when he had the misfortune to knock his tin of bait into the river. Leaning over the
side of the bridge, he tried to hook the tin and pull it out of the river. As he did so, his car keys fell
out of his pocket and disappeared into the water.

Feeling thoroughly annoyed with himself and his bad luck, the fisherman leaned over the bridge
to try and see where his keys had gone. As he did so, the bridge collapsed and he fell into the
water. This was the last straw. The fisherman crawled out of the river and went back to his car.
There he discovered that he had locked the doors and could not get in. His anti-theft lock had

Pamela, Juliet and Nomsa were returning home from school when Nomsa met her fate. At the
edge of a river, Nomsa suddenly screamed with pain and called for help. When her friends saw

While Magura and I were following the spoor of a wounded elephant, we heard a dry branch
crack. I knew what it meant. The elephant had stopped and was waiting for us, but the bush in that
part of Zimbabwe was so thick that I could not see ten metres in front of me.
Then suddenly, the elephant charged. Before I could fire, it knocked me down. It turned swiftly
and stood over me. Bending both knees, it tried to impale me with its tusks. Luckily, these were
wide apart and they missed my body on both sides.
I lay between the tusks trying to push myself out from under the beast. Then I heard a shot.
Magura had fired, but failed to kill it. The elephant lifted its massive head and began to walk
away. As it did so, one of its huge feet just missed my face.
