HOMEWORK
While a small boy of six years old, Joel allowed a dog to kill one of his father’s sheep. It made
Taurai so angry that he chased Nandi and her two children from his kraal. There was nowhere for
her to go. She was forced to return to her own people. Joel hated his mother’s people, the Tonga.
However, he worked hard looking after their goats and herd of cattle. One day his herd was
attacked by a black mamba. During the struggle, a prized black bull was killed. This was the
king’s favourite bull. Joel, then aged thirteen, bravely attacked and killed the snake.
The Tonga chief called Joel to his kraal and told him that he had heard of his bravery. He gave
him a goat as a reward. This made Joel happy but he still suffered from the sneers and cruel taunts
of the other boys who called him “fatherless”. This made him feel unwanted by everybody.

COMPREHENSION
READ THE LETTER AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW.
Dear Ebenezer Dorset
We have your boy hidden in a place far from town. It is useless for you or the most skilful
policeman to try to find him. The only way you can have him restored to you is this: we demand
fifteen hundred dollars for his return. The money is to be left at midnight at the same spot and in
the same box as your answer. If you agree to these terms, send your answer in writing by a single
messenger tonight at half past eight. After crossing Mukuvisi River on the way to Mutare, there
are three large trees about seventy metres apart close to the riverbank on the right. At the bottom
of the third tree, the messenger will find a box. Your messenger should place your answer in this
box and return immediately to your home.
If you try any tricks or fail to fail to agree to our demands, you will never see your son again. If
you pay the money, he will be returned to you safely and well within three hours. These terms are
final. There will be no further communication.

A great sea wave took and carried Dominic towards the shore. It left him on the land extremely
tired, with the water he had taken in. At once Dominic got up his feet and walked to a dry place
and lay there more dead than alive. After a while, he was sick and he vomited a lot of sea water
which had got into his stomach. Then he lay down to rest, but he dared not to sleep on the ground
for fear of being attacked by wild beasts.
So Dominic climbed up a tree and remained there until morning. He knew that all his friends had
been killed and he alone had been saved. He was very tired and he quickly dozed off.

My aunt Dione, who was a good swimmer, took Tadiwanashe and me as well as her children,
Lesley and Kuda to the swimming pool.
“There are several ways of swimming,” began Aunt Dione. “The elderly man over there is doing
the side stroke. It is not very fast, but easy to do. The boy here is doing the crawl, the most
popular stroke. Notice that he uses his arms in an overarm stroke. That girl there is doing the
breast stroke. She swims front downwards and she is not supposed to turn her body to the side at
all. That man swimming on his back is doing a stroke called back crawl. The tall girl there is
trying to do the butterfly stroke. It is the latest stroke, but is tiresome as both arms have to be
lifted out of the water at the same time.”

I had a toothache. The pain was like the ticking of a clock through my jaw. I had
no rest, day or night. Nothing would stop the pain. Aspirins and other pain killers were of no help.
I was too big a coward to visit the dentist. At last I could bear it no longer. I visited a dentist and
when I arrived there, I was told by his nurse to sit down in the waiting room. I selected a
magazine from the table and looked through it in order to hide my fear from the other patients
sitting there.
“Will you come this way?” said the nurse.
Feeling like a lamb being led to the slaughter, I followed her into the surgery and sat down in the
dentist’s chair.
“Open your mouth and let me see what the trouble is!” said the dentist. “Do not worry, it will soon
be over,” the dentist assured me. I shut my eyes and made a short prayer. I thought I was going to
kick the bucket for sure. The dentist was right. The ordeal was over in a flash.

26October 1993
Dear Jane
Many thanks for your letter. I enjoyed reading about your visit to Hwange Game Reserve.
I spent the first week of the holiday at Matopo Hills. My father drove me there. I then visited my
uncle who lives on a farm near a railway siding called Chemhuru. During my stay, I saw some
rhinos in the nearby game park. They came close to the fence and were often fed oranges by
visitors.
I returned home last Monday. My uncle accompanied me as far as the siding and my father met
me at the station. Since Monday, I have been working on my school project. I am saving all my
pocket money because I want to pay my uncle another visit. I have been helping my mother with
the household chores.
How are you and your family? Here we are fine. Give my regards to everyone.
Your friend
Jennifer

Read the passage that follows and answer the questions in full sentences.
An Englishman living near Sheffield had the most unlucky day’s fishing. He was standing on a
low bridge when he had the misfortune to knock his tin of bait into the river. Leaning over the
side of the bridge, he tried to hook the tin and pull it out of the river. As he did so, his car keys fell
out of his pocket and disappeared into the water.
Feeling thoroughly annoyed with himself and his bad luck, the fisherman leaned over the bridge
to try and see where his keys had gone. As he did so, the bridge collapsed and he fell into the
water. This was the last straw. The fisherman crawled out of the river and went back to his car.
There he discovered that he had locked the doors and could not get in. His anti-theft lock had
immobilised the car. There was nothing left for him to do, but walk sadly home.

JAMES TELLS HIS STORY
While Magura and I were following the spoor of a wounded elephant, we heard a dry branch
crack. I knew what it meant. The elephant had stopped and was waiting for us, but the bush in that
part of Zimbabwe was so thick that I could not see ten metres in front of me.
Then suddenly, the elephant charged. Before I could fire, it knocked me down. It turned swiftly
and stood over me. Bending both knees, it tried to impale me with its tusks. Luckily, these were
wide apart and they missed my body on both sides.
I lay between the tusks trying to push myself out from under the beast. Then I heard a shot.
Magura had fired, but failed to kill it. The elephant lifted its massive head and began to walk
away. As it did so, one of its huge feet just missed my face.

The Football Match
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow in complete sentences.
South Zone’s soccer team, J.B United, sailed into the next round of the Natbrew Cup when they
beat visiting Mufaro United in an interesting game at Mucheke Stadium, Masvingo, last Sunday.
For the first ten minutes, Mufaro United appeared as though they could win, but J.B took the lead
only two minutes before half time. Nimble-footed Sharaaz Kassim swept past two defenders
before passing to Maziriri who scored with a spectacular drive.
Kassim was responsible for goal two for J.B. He powered the ball into the goal past Mufaro’s
goalie, Costa Paragiblipakis, in the 78th minute. Minutes later J.B substituted Canaan Cyrus for
Kayz. This turned out to be very worthwhile, as Cyrus brought J.B their last two goals, and a clear
victory.
