Water is the driving force of nature. Imagining life without water is like imagining a tree without roots. The essence of
water is known to even those creatures who can’t speak. Humans, who presume themselves as the lords of this planet, too
can’t live without water for more than three days. If we unfold the pages of history, it won’t be surprising to find that ancient
civilizations always settled near rivers or coasts.
It is of vital importance, both socially and economically, to ensure the distribution of water all across the country.
Many people don’t have access to clean water, so they survive by drinking contaminated water which can cause sickness,
even death, as some people can’t afford hospital and healthcare facilities. Due to excessive pumping of underground water,
the quality of water is being contaminated rapidly with heavy metals which can pose serious health hazards.
The problem of water shortage in Pakistan has gained the momentum, and the Pakistan has the 4rth highest rate of
water use in the world. The problems faced by the water sector in the country are many, acute and serious. Therefore,
building of more reservoirs and effective management strategy are the needs of the hour. We should use distillation
technique to remove salt from sea water, converting it into fresh drinking water, we can further collect rain in the dams. This
will not only increase water supply, but also increase hydro power generation and lower the sea-level, thus reducing flood
threats.

(6 + 4x3= 18)
The alarming and incessant growth of population is causing serious economic problems in almost all continents. Great
pressure is being placed on arable land, water energy and biological resources. As the world population grows, the food
problem will become increasingly severe. Certainly, with a quarter million people being added to the world population each
day, the need for grains and all other food will reach unprecedented levels. More than 99 percent of the world’s food supply
comes from the land. At present, fertile agricultural land is being lost at an alarming rate.
Water is another critical item for cultivation. Massive amount of water is required during the growing season for
cultivation. Competition for water resources among individuals, regions, countries and associated human activities are
already occurring with the current world population. Water resources are under great stress as populated cities, states and
countries require and withdraw more water from rivers, lakes, and resources used for food production. The developed
countries use massive amounts of fossil energy for fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation and for machines as a substitute for
human labour, because fossil energy is a finite resource, its depletion accelerates as population needs for food and services
escalate.
Strategies for the future must be based on the conservation and careful management of land, water, energy and
biological resources needed for food production. Yet none of these measures will be sufficient to ensure adequate food
supplies for future generations unless the population growth is simultaneously curtailed.
Questions:
(i) Summarize the given passage. Also suggest a suitable title to it. (5+1=6)
