FOCUS: PAST SIMPLE / PRONUNCIATION ‘ED’ verbs (A – D)

TASK 1
Change the verbs below from their base infinitive form to the past simple. Then, looking only at the
regular verbs, decide whether the ‘ed’ pronunciation in the past has a /id/, /t/ or /d/ sound.
Pronunciation guide: created = /id/, cooked = /t/, called = /d/
The /id/ sound = after verbs ending in a t or d sound, e.g. want – wanted = /ˈwɒntɪd/.
The /t/ sound = verbs ending in p, k, f, gh, sh, ch, ss, c and x sound, e.g. cough – coughed = /kɒft/.
The /d/ sound = after verbs ending in l, n, r, g, v, s, z, m and b sound – comb – combed = /kəʊmd/.
