Arithmetic Progressions

An arithmetic progression (AP), also called an arithmetic sequence, is a sequence

of numbers which differ from each other by a common difference. For example,
the sequence 2, 4, 6, 8 is an arithmetic sequence with the common difference 2.

Each number in the sequence is known as term.

The difference between a term with its preceding term is called as common
difference which is represented by ‘d’. It can be positive, negative or zero.
d = a2 - a1
General form of A.P

First term of A.P. = 0

Common difference = d

Sequence - a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ……

nth term of A.P

Let a1, a2, a3, a4, a5, …,an be a sequence.

Let, first term of A.P. = a1 = a
Common difference = d
a1 = a = a + (1-1)d
a2 = a + (2-1)d
a3 = a + (3-1)d
. .
. .
. .
an = a + (n-1)d
Sum of first n terms of A.P
Sum of first n terms of A.P

Let a sequence be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …..n

a = 1, d = 2-1 = 1

Sn = n/2 {2 x 1 + (n-1)1} = n/2 ( 2 + n - 1) = n/2 (1 + n)

Sn = n/2 (n+1) is the sum of first n positive integers.

Let’s Solve Some Important Questions!!!
1. In an AP, if the common difference (d) = - 4 and the seventh term (a7) is
4, then find the first term.
2. Which term of the AP: 3, 15, 27, 39, … will be 120 more than its 21st
term?.
3. . If Sn the sum of first n terms of an AP is given by Sn = 3n2 – 4n, find the
nth term.
4. Find, how many two digit natural numbers are divisible by 7?
5. How many terms of the AP 65, 60, 55, … should be taken so that their
sum is zero?
6. If mth term of an AP is 1/n and nth term is 1/m, then find the sum
of its first mn term.
7. The 16th term of an AP is five times its third term. if its 10th term
is 41, then find the sum of its first fifteen terms.
8. If the sum of first four terms of an AP is 40 and that of first 14 terms
is 280. Find the sum of its first n terms.
9. Ramkali required Rs 2500 after 12 weeks to send her daughter to
school. She saved Rs 100 in the first week and increased her weekly
saving by Rs 20 every seek. Find whether she will be able to send her
daughter to school after 12 weeks or not. What value is generated in
the above situation?
10. A sum of Rs 1600 is to be used to given ten cash prizes to students of
a school for their overall academic performance. If each prize is Rs 20
less than its preceding prize, find the value of each of the prizes.
