PEE Lab Session 9 Open and Closed Loop Systems (2025)(1)

This lab experiment focuses on understanding open- and closed-loop control systems using a Feedback DC Motor Kit. Students will calibrate a tachogenerator, connect the motor in both configurations, and record observations in a logbook. The experiment aims to enhance comprehension of control system features and applications.

Lab Sheet 9: Open- and Closed-Loop Control Systems

Open- and Closed Loop Control Systems [Total Marks: 30]

The main objective of this lab experiment is to understand the features of open- and closed-
loop control systems. You are provided with Feedback DC Motor (FDCM) Kit (Analogue
Mechanical Unit and Control Unit). Firstly, you will connect the FDCM to draw the tacho
generator (TG) voltage versus speed curve. After it, you will connect FDCM kit to control the
shaft position of the DC motor using open-loop and closed loop control systems. After the
completion of this lab, you will be able to digest the concept of both control configurations
and also to understand the features of both systems. Search some of the other applications
of these systems and record in your logbook.

Equipment required:

DC Motor Kit (includes analogue and control units), power supply, Connecting leads,
Oscilloscope, Digital Multimeter and graph paper, Logbook

Procedure:

1. Calibrate the Tachogenerator by recording the output voltage for a range of shaft speeds.
Connect the diagram as shown in Figure 1. Change the input power to the power amplifier
by changing the variable resistor (connected in series with the power amplifier). Record
the speed and output voltage of the TG. Using graphical methods and assuming a linear
relationship: [4 Marks (Graph) plus 1 Mark (Kt)]
• Plot a graph of TG output voltage, Vt, against shaft speed, N (radians/sec).
• Determine the TG constant Kt (Volts/radian/second) such that Vt = K t N

2. Connect the control unit as shown in Figure 3. The connection shows that the motor is
connected in the open-loop configuration. Also connect an oscilloscope at the output of
the motor or TG to visualise the output. Use position dial & control the shaft position.

• Can you achieve a position point of the shaft by moving input position dial? Comment
on your results. [2 Marks]
• Sketch a block diagram and label your diagram with appropriate block names.
[4 Marks]
• Display the oscilloscope screen and attach it into your logbook. [2 Marks]

3. Repeat the procedure explain in step 2 but now close the loop as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4: Closed-loop Control

• Control the output shaft position by providing a reference input from the input dial.
[2 Marks]
• Can you achieve a position point of the shaft by moving input position dial? [2 Marks]
• Sketch a block diagram and label you diagram with appropriate block names.
[4 Marks]
• Display the oscilloscope screen and attach it into your logbook. [2 Marks]

Discussion on Results and Observations:

Maintain a systematic record of your observations and results in your logbook. You must explain how
did you manage to get these results and what was involved in gaining the results. Your observations
and results will reflect your confidence in terms of digestion of the concepts as provided in the lecture
session. [7 Marks]
