COMPUTING THE LENGTH, AREA AND VOLUME OF CONCRETE BUILDING PARTS In order that the computation of the length, area and volume of concrete for the various parts of a building would be systematic and consistent throughout, the limiting dimensions of each should be defined. When a column and a beam intersect each other, we should know whether the concrete at their intersection should be included in the volume of concrete of the beam or of the column. The same problem is encountered in a concrete siab and beam construction where the concrete at the upper part of the beam is also a part of the slab. CONCRETE SLABS In computing the area of a concrete slab supported by beams and/or girders, the surface measurements should be taken from the clear distance between the beams and/or girders. In the case of concrete slabs on fil enclosed by masonry walls, the surface measurements for computing its area should be the clear distance between the interior faces of the walls. In a cantilever or overhanging concrete slab, the width (or length) to be considered when computing its area should be the distance between the outer face of the supporting beam, girder or wall and the tip of its free end. i ue . i p CONCRETE SLAI yan \| TLR BUR The concrete volume of slabs with uniform thickness is equal to its surface area multiplied by its thickness. For a rectangular concrete slab with width W, length L and thickness t, its volume of concrete is: W xL xt= Volume of concrete (In cubic meters if all the dimensions are in meters) AAT ESTIMATING BILL OF MATERIALS - Tagayun CONCRETE BEAMS AND GIRDERS The width, depth and length of a concrete beam or girder should be correctly delineated before estimating the required materials. The width b and depth d of concrete beams or girders with, and without slabs integrally built with them are shown in the cross-section drawings below: YPN Rh jp} p> 4 Muttiplying the value of b by that of d gives the cross-sectional area of the beam or girder, thus: a b xd = Cross-sectional area of beamigirder The length L of a concrete beam or girder should be considered as the clear distance between its supports. This means that the width of the columns, concrete load-bearing walls or any other concrete supports to which the beam or girder is integrally built should not be included as part of its length. This condition is illustrated in the drawings below: To get the concrete volume of a beam or girder, multiply its cross-sectional area by its length, thus: bx dxL= Concrete volume of beam/girder AaB CANTILEVER BEAMS AND GIRDERS A cantilever beam or girder is one which projects beyond its support. The width of a typical cantilever concrete beam or girder is uniform thru out its length. However, its depth usually tapers from the face of the support towards the free end. In computing the cross-sectional area of a tapering cantilever beam or girder, its depth d to be multiplied by its width b should be taken at the middle of its span. To determine the value of this average depth, add the depth at the face of its support and that at its free end. Then divide it by 2. Its length Lis the distance between the tip of its free end and the outer face of the support. For example, in the tapering cantilever beam shown below, if the depths at its tip and that at the face of its support are 0.30m and 0.60m respectively, then its depth at midspan is: _0.30m+0.60m a =0.45m mo : DEPTH AT FACE, OF SUPPORT eer ar SU couumn pers NON-TAPERING CANTILEVER BEAM/GIRDER ‘TAPERING CANTILEVER BEAM/GIRDER ‘The formula for computing the concrete volume of a cantilever beam or girder is: bxdxL_ = Concrete volume of beam/girder If, for the beams shown, the width b = 0.25m; depth d = C.45m; and the length L is 2.00 meters, then the concrete volume of each is: V=0.20m x 0.45m x 2.00m = 0.18 Cubic meter 49 ESTIMATING BILL OF MATERIALS - Tagayun CONTINUOUS FOOTINGS, COLUMNS AND COLUMN FOOTINGS. Their equivalent lengths in METERS are shown immediately to the right at the second column. At the first line running horizontally to the right, are increases of the length in feet - from 1 inch to 11 inches. To get the metric conversion of a certain length given in feet plus a few inches, run your finger downwards in the first column and stop at the desired measurement in feet. Next, move it horizontally to the right unti it is aligned vertically with the given additional number of inches appearing in the first line above. The figure where the finger stops is the equivalent measurement in meters of the given length in feet and inches. A.53 ESTIMATING BILL OF MATERIALS - Tagayun SUGGESTED FORMAT OF THE BILL OF MATERIALS AND SUMMARY COST ESTIMATES After determining the various materials needed for the construction project and computing the corresponding quantities required, the data should be organized and presented like the sample Bill of Materials shown on the following pages. It also includes the summary cost estimates for materials, labor and other construction expenses. A unique feature of our bill of materials is the “portrait” format containing the drawings and specifications of the doors and windows for the project. This presentation is also adaptable for wrought iron grilles, steel gates and other prefabricated building components. Among its advantages: (1) the drawings are more handy when soliciting price quotations from suppliers; (2) they save on drafting work because the illustrations in the bill of materials need not be drawn in the project working drawings anymore. Moreover, file copies of designs also used in other projects can be readily reproduced by photocopying or white printing (for originals on tracing paper), thereby eliminating the need for re-drafting as often as the need arises. The first column in our bill of materials should show the descriptions of the required articles. As much as possible, the brand names of manufactured products should also be included. They must be the ‘same as those mentioned in the project's Specifications. Under Quantity the estimated number of pieces, volume, etc. of the materials should be entered. The appropriate units of measure by which they are sold are shown under the column Unit. Unit Cost refers to the sale price per the indicated unit of measure of the commodity to be bought. Its Total Cost is the product of the quantity and the unit cost of the material required. Initially, these two columns may be left blank until one has obtained the prevailing prices of the desired construction materials. The current cost can he verified from dealers or manufacturers thru the telephone or by providing them copies of the bill of materials wherein they can indicate their price quotations. To illustrate how the bill of materials should be completed, answers which we are to assume as appropriate at the time this was prepared are entered in all the columns under the heading, |. Foundation, Concrete Columns, Beams and Concrete Hollow Block Walls. The amount that appears across the heading is the sum of all the total costs of materials listed under it. The last page of the bill of materials contains a suggested format for summarizing the overall expenses for a small construction project. The total cost of the materials is the sum of all the computed amounts shown across the headings in the bill of materials. To give allowance for overlooked items, Miscellaneous heading is included and its estimated cost would depend upon the estimator’s thoroughness and the degree of completeness of the materials already listed. Other headings should be added where so required by the project. The cost of labor can be obtained from reputable labor contractors. It may range front 30% to 35% of the total projected expenses for materials. Contingencies are also included to take care of unexpected rise in the costs of labor and materials. Payment for the various constructions permits and for supervision fees are part of the indirect expenses. If the construction is to be undertaken by a contractor, other costs would include the contractor's tax and profit, overhead expenses, etc. AS4 Project Location Page 1 BILL OF MATERIALS Unit Total Description of Material Quantity | unit | cose barr 1, FOUNDATION, CONCRETE COLUMNS, BEAMS AND CONCRETE HOLLOW BLOCKS WALLS .. 121,680.00 Portland Cement, ATLAS brand 450 | Bag | 6500 29,250.00 ‘Washed Sand 30 | cum | 25000 7,500.00 Gravel or Crushed Stones 45 | cum | 350.00 1,750.00 Earth Fil 5 90.00 1,350.00 Cone.
