(F) Grade 12 Sba Practical Task 2

The document outlines a Grade 12 Life Sciences practical task focused on investigating genetically inherited human characteristics, specifically tongue rolling, earlobe attachment, and hairline shape. It includes instructions for conducting the investigation, recording results, and analyzing data through various questions and tasks. The total score for the task is 35, and students are expected to demonstrate skills in observation, data recording, and hypothesis testing.

TIME: 60 MINUTES

This question paper consists of 8 pages.

GENETICS

THEME: Investigate three human characteristics which are genetically inherited.

SKILLS COVERED: Follow instructions, Make observations, Record data, Interpret,

Hypothesis testing

Background information

Humans inherit half of their fathers characteristics and half of their mothers’ characteristics.
Inside the nucleus of each human cell there are chromosomes which carry these
characterisctics in the form of genes. Each gene has two alleles,or different forms of the
same gene. Alleles can be dominant or recessive.

Three examples of different human characteristics are shown below.

1. The tongue: Characteristic of a gene: The ability to roll his/her tongue.

Allele: Tongue-roller (dominant) Allele: Non roller (recessive)

2. The ear: Characteristic of a gene: An individual has unattached earlobes or attached

earlobes.

Allele: Unattached earlobe (dominant) Allele: Attached earlobe (recessive)

3. The hairline: Characteristic of a gene: An individual has a widow’s peak or not

LFSC Gr 12 PRACTICAL 2 3 MDE/26 MAY 2022

A grade 12 class conducted an investigation to determine the number of people

who can roll their tongues. The teacher gave them pictures of 8 people which were
randomly selected from the internet.

RESULTS:

Question 1.
State the dependent variable in the investigation.

Question 2
Give the results obtained in the investigation according to your observation.

Question 3
State TWO ways in which you could make the results of this investigation more
reliable.

School.

Question 6

Study the pictures ON PAGE 7, showing 12 people with different traits. Only focus on
the shape of their earlobes and hairlines.

Design your own table and record the number of people with the different alleles for
earlobes and different hairlines.

In your table you should include the percentage of people displaying each phenotype
for each of the two genetic characteristics.

Design your table here, and record your results:

Question 7

Using the same axes, draw a bar graph to represent the percentage of people
displaying each phenotype for each of the THREE characteristics in this investigation.

Question 8

Use the letters R (tongue-roller) and r (non-roller) to show the phenotypic and
genotypic ratios of offspring resulting from a cross between two heterozygous
individuals.

Question 9
A male who is homozygous for widow’s peak and heterozygous for tongue
rolling is crossed with a female without widow’s peak and heterozygous
for tongue rolling. Use the letters P for widow”s peak and R for tongue rolling.

9.2.1 How many characteristics are being studied in this cross?
