two top tips for
performing comedy...

1. Let them like you...

Even if you have a stage character that is unlikeable, bear in mind that
you have to bond with your audience. Without that bond, they won't
want to listen to you. I've heard arguments that making them laugh with
your first line is very important, but I'm not so sure. I think you need to
make them like you with your opening few lines, get them to trust you,
then they will follow you where you want to go. Something as simple as
saying hello, acknowledging people's presence, saying it's stuffy if it's
stuffy. The sort of thing you might say to someone you just happen to be

Wing Mirror
What you need:
Go along to your local garage, or scrapyard
and get yourself a wing-mirror. Then break it,
like in the photograph here. Place the broken
wing-mirror into a carrier bag, and you are
ready to go!

What you do is this:

Approach a table of guests and announce Shahid Malik & Lisa, just before The remarkable Kokov, signing
that you are going to do some mind reading. going off to get a cardboard box an autograph for himself!
Say something along the lines of: “Would I from Tesco.
be correct if I said that one of you has
arrived here this evening in their car?” At
this, someone will either say ‘yes’ or nod.
Whoever has indicated that they have a car,
you ask them what model of car they have,
then say to them: “And would I be correct
sir, if I said that your car has a wing mirror
missing?” Say this very seriously…they will
say “no”. Then you look at them very
seriously and say: “No, I think I’m right!” –
and as you say this, you bring out a broken
wing-mirror from a carrier bag while
continuing, “I’m sorry, I knocked this off in
the car park when I was reversing…” This is
a terrific opener at a table or even for a
stand-up spot. Works wonders every single
time.

SECRETS OF HOW TO WIN A
MAJOR MAGIC COMPETITION
Mark Leveridge

"And the winner is........". Yep, it's at that moment that you wake up to find that you are not just about to be
announced as the FISM Grand Prix winner after all. If only you could have slept on just a few more minutes,
you might have been crowned the champion. For many magicians, hope of winning a top magic competition
is a somewhat utopian aim, but for others it is a real tangible goal, and one which they will put a huge
amount of time, preparation and effort into achieving. We thought it would be interesting to chat to three high
achievers to see if they can lift the lid on just what is required to be a competition winner, and so please
welcome our three all conquering contestants, Marc Oberon, Nicholas Einhorn and Peter Wardell!

If you want the real deal in terms of information, then it pays to go to the best.
Here is the impressive winning roll call of our three experts....

OK, so don't get put off, these guys had to

of being scrutinised by their peers? Surely,

Fringe Benefits
Given all the information which our experts
have provided, you may be left with the feeling
that it all seems rather fraught with difficult
hurdles. So is it all worth the effort? Nick has
certainly noticed the effects of his success, as
it has provided him with credibility when selling
his act to the general public, it has led to him
being booked as a lecturer and performer at a
variety of magic conventions, and it has
enabled him to travel and to meet some of the
world's greatest magicians. Hmmm, seems
like a good trade off!
