A Simple Guide to Solving Percentage Problems

Introduction
This guide explains how to solve math problems about percentages in a very simple way,
as if teaching a young child or someone with no math background. It covers five types of
percentage problems from your attachments, using examples like candies and pizzas to
make it easy to understand. At the end, Ill show you how to turn this guide into a PDF.

1 What Are Percentages?

Imagine you have a pizza cut into 100 equal slices. If you take 25 slices, thats 25% of
the pizza, because 25 is one-quarter of 100. If you take 50 slices, thats 50%, or half the
pizza. A percentage is just a way to say how many out of 100 when talking about parts
of something.

2 Types of Problems in Your Attachments

Your five attachments contain different percentage problems:
1. Finding percentages of a number (e.g., 21% of 3228).
1
2. Converting fractions to percentages (e.g., 5
to a percentage).
3. Calculating percentage changes (e.g., from 50 to 80).
4. Solving complex percentage equations (e.g., 20% of 30% of 40 equals something).
5. Solving a word problem about ages using percentages.
Lets learn how to solve each type step by step.

3 Finding a Percentage of a Number

Suppose you have 100 candies, and you want to give away 20%. Since 20% means 20 out
of 100, you give away 20 candies. But what if you have 3228 candies and want 21% of
them?

Steps to Solve
1. Find 1% of the number by dividing it by 100. For 3228: 3228 ÷ 100 = 32.28.
2. Multiply by the percentage you want. For 21%: 32.28 × 21.
3. To make it easier, approximate if allowed. Since 3228 is close to 3200:
• 10% of 3200 is 3200 ÷ 10 = 320.
• 20% is 2 × 320 = 640.
• 1% is about 32, so 21% is 640 + 32 = 672.
4. Since 3228 is a bit more than 3200, the answer is around 678.

1
Example from Attachment 1
For x = 3228, find 21% of x:
• Exact: 21
100
× 3228 = 0.21 × 3228 ≈ 677.88, so about 678.
• Approximate: 10% of 3228 is 322.8, 20% is 645.6, 1% is 32.28, so 21% is 645.6 +
32.28 ≈ 678.
You can use this method for other percentages like 10%, 5%, 33.33%, or 50.5%.

Percentage Approximate Value for 3228

10% 322.8
5% 161.4
21% 678
33.33% 1076
50.5% 1630

Table 1: Approximate percentages of 3228 from Attachment 1.

4 Converting Fractions to Percentages

A fraction like 15 means 1 part out of 5 equal parts. To find what percentage this is, you
need to express it as a part of 100.

Steps to Solve
1. Divide the top number by the bottom number. For 15 : 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2.
2. Multiply by 100: 0.2 × 100 = 20%.
3. If its a tricky fraction, use a calculator for division.

Examples from Attachment 2

Here are the fractions from your attachment and their percentages:
• 1
5
: 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2, 0.2 × 100 = 20%.
• 2
7
: 2 ÷ 7 ≈ 0.2857, 0.2857 × 100 ≈ 28.57%, so about 28.6%.
• 5
8
: 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625, 0.625 × 100 = 62.5%.
• 4
11
: 4 ÷ 11 ≈ 0.3636, 0.3636 × 100 ≈ 36.36%, so about 36.4%.
• 14
9
: 14 ÷ 9 ≈ 1.5556, 1.5556 × 100 ≈ 155.56%.
• 22
44
: 22 ÷ 44 = 0.5, 0.5 × 100 = 50%.

5 Calculating Percentage Change

If something changes, like a price going from $50 to $80, you can find the percentage
change to see how much it increased or decreased.

Table 2: Fractions and their percentage equivalents from Attachment 2.

Steps to Solve
1. Find the difference: New value minus old value.
2. Divide the difference by the old value.
3. Multiply by 100 to get the percentage.

Formula
New Value − Old Value
Percentage Change = × 100%
Old Value

Examples from Attachment 3

• From 50 to 80:
– Difference: 80 − 50 = 30.
– Percentage: 30
50
× 100% = 60% (increase).
• From 80 to 50:
– Difference: 50 − 80 = −30.
−30
– Percentage: 80
× 100% = −37.5%, so 37.5% decrease.

Change Difference Percentage Change

50 to 80 30 60% increase
80 to 50 -30 37.5% decrease
27 to 51 24 88.89% increase
120 to 100 -20 16.67% decrease
56 to 77 21 37.5% increase
154 to 143 -11 7.14% decrease

6 Solving Complex Percentage Problems

Some problems involve multiple percentages or unknowns, like 20% of 30% of 40 = 40%
of 20% of what?

3
Steps to Solve
1. Break the problem into small steps.
2. Calculate each percentage one at a time.
3. If theres an unknown, set up an equation and solve.

Examples from Attachment 4

• Problem (a): 20% of 30% of 40 = 40% of 20% of ?
– Left side: 30% of 40 = 30
100
× 40 = 12. 20% of 12 = 20
100
× 12 = 2.4.
– Right side: Let the unknown be x. 20% of x = 20
100
× x = 0.2x. 40% of that
40
= 100 × 0.2x = 0.08x.
2.4
– Set equal: 0.08x = 2.4. Solve: x = 0.08
= 30.
• Problem (d): 75% of a number is 304.5 more than 40% of the same number. Find
5% of that number.
– Let the number be x.
– 75% of x = 0.75x, 40% of x = 0.4x.
– Equation: 0.75x = 0.4x + 304.5.
– Solve: 0.75x − 0.4x = 304.5, so 0.35x = 304.5, x = 304.5
0.35
= 870.
– 5% of 870 = 5
100
× 870 = 43.5.

7 Solving Percentage Word Problems

Word problems, like the one about ages, involve setting up relationships between quan-
tities.

Example from Attachment 5

Rajeshs age is 20% more than Maheshs, and Maheshs age is 25% more than Reenas. By
what percentage is Reenas age less than Rajeshs?
• Let Reenas age be R.
• Maheshs age: M = R + 0.25R = 1.25R.
• Rajeshs age: Raj = M + 0.2M = 1.2M = 1.2 × 1.25R = 1.5R.
• Find percentage Reenas age is less than Rajeshs:
– Difference: Raj − R = 1.5R − R = 0.5R.
– Percentage: 0.5R
1.5R
× 100% = 1
3
× 100% ≈ 33.33%.
