ABSTRACT
This research paper examines the drainage system and solid waste management practices at the 10 Number
Market in Bhopal, with a focus on identifying key challenges and proposing effective solutions for sustainable
urban management. The study incorporates field surveys, interviews with local vendors and municipal
authorities, and an analysis of existing drainage and waste management infrastructure. Findings reveal that the
drainage system in the fulwari area is often obstructed by solid waste, leading to waterlogging and unsanitary
conditions. Additionally, improper waste disposal practices near bittan market, including the lack of segregated
collection and inadequate disposal facilities, exacerbate environmental and health risks in the area. The
research highlights the need for an integrated approach that combines improved drainage system design,
better waste management practices, and community awareness programs. The paper recommends enhancing
the capacity of the drainage system, implementing regular cleaning and maintenance schedules, promoting
waste segregation, and providing better waste disposal infrastructure. These solutions aim to improve the
overall sanitation, reduce flooding, and enhance the quality of life for both vendors and consumers in the 10
Number Market. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on sustainable urban planning and waste
management in Indian marketplaces.

I. INTRODUCTION
Urban markets often grapple with significant waste management and drainage issues due to high population
density and commercial activities. Effective management of these systems ensures public health, environmental
sustainability, and economic efficiency. This paper investigates the current status of drainage and waste
management in 10 No. Market and Bittan Market, two bustling commercial hubs in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
II. OBJECTIVES
1. To evaluate the current drainage and waste management practices in 10 No. Market and Bittan Market.
2. To analyze the scope for improvement and existing limitations in these systems.
3. To propose actionable recommendations for better management and sustainability.
III. METHODOLOGY
The research follows a mixed-methods approach:
Data Collection Field Survey:
Site visits to map the drainage network and waste disposal sites.
Photographic documentation of key areas.
Stakeholder Interviews:
Discussions with shopkeepers, waste management workers, and municipal authorities.
Structured questionnaires to gather qualitative insights.
Secondary Data Analysis:
Review of municipal records, past studies, and urban planning documents.
Analysis of relevant policies and guidelines by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Tools Used
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping drainage systems. Statistical analysis software for
processing survey data.
IV. OBSERVATIONS
Drainage System:
10 No. Market:
Narrow, poorly maintained drainage channels prone to clogging.
Frequent waterlogging during monsoons, causing inconvenience to commuters.
Lack of regular cleaning and maintenance.
Bittan Market:
Better drainage infrastructure but inadequate to handle peak loads during heavy rains.
Encroachments blocking drainage outlets.
Limited integration of sustainable drainage solutions like rainwater harvesting.
Waste Management:
10 No. Market:
Insufficient waste bins leading to littering in public spaces.
Irregular waste collection schedule.
Limited segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
Bittan Market:
Higher number of waste collection bins but poor awareness among stakeholders about their usage. Significant
amount of untreated organic waste from eateries. Overreliance on manual scavenging methods.
hich are used is presented in this section. Table and model should be in prescribed format.
V. ANALYSIS
Scope
Integration of Technology: Smart waste bins with sensors and GPS-enabled waste collection vehicles.
Community Engagement: Awareness campaigns and workshops on waste segregation.
Sustainable Practices: Implementation of composting units and rainwater harvesting structures.
Limitations
Resource Constraints: Limited budget allocation for infrastructure upgrades.
Behavioral Challenges: Resistance to adopting waste segregation practices among vendors and customers.
Policy Gaps: Absence of comprehensive guidelines for drainage and waste management in commercial markets.

VI. CONCLUSION
The drainage and waste management systems in 10 No. Market and Bittan Market are integral to the
functioning of these bustling commercial hubs. While there is significant scope for improvement, the challenges
require a multi-pronged approach involving infrastructure upgrades, community participation, and robust
policymaking. By addressing these gaps, Bhopal can set an example for sustainable urban management in India.
