The capital of Britain, London, is in England. London consists of three cities: the City of
London, the City of Westminster and the City of Southwark. London has got a population
of about 7 million people. That’s 13 % of Britain’s population. London stands on the River
Thames. There are 27 bridges over the Thames in London and 8 tunnels under the river.
London is the seventh biggest city in the world.
In London there are a lot of famous places, for example the Houses of Parliament;
Buckingham Palace, where the Queen lives; the Tower of London; Madame Tussaud’s;
Trafalgar Square with Nelson’s Column; Oxford Street; 10. Downing Street, where the
Prime Minister lives; Hyde Park; London Eye; Tower Bridge and the River Thames.
At the Tower of London there are the Crown Jewels because today it is a museum.
The Tower was built in the 11th century. It was a prison for the noble people. A lot
of people lost their heads here. The most famous of them is Anne Boleyn, King
Henry VIII’s wife. The Tower is famous for its ghosts. It is said that Anne Boleyn
often haunts in the Tower, walking with her head in her hands.
In Trafalgar Square there are beautiful fountains, and you can feed the pigeons
living here. Here stands Nelson’s Column. Admiral Nelson was one of the most
famous admirals, who fought against Napoleon on the sea. He died in the famous
battle at Trafalgar, where he beat the French.
In one of the towers of the Houses of Parliament there is the famous Big Ben. It is a
big clock.
At Madame Tussaud’s you can see the most famous people: film stars, politicians,
musicians, kings and queens made of wax. These wax figures are very lifelike.
Tourists like taking photographs with them.
London Eye is a giant 135-metre high wheel which was built for the Millennium
2000. It stands on the bank of the River Thames, opposite the Houses of Parliament
and gives a beautiful view of London from its top. It has 32 glass capsules that
move slowly around without a stop. A ride takes around an hour.
In London there are a lot of famous museums and galleries too, for example the
British Museum, the Natural History Museum or the Tate Gallery which is the
museum of modern arts.
The most popular shopping places for tourists are the Oxford Street and Harrods
which is one of the most elegant and expensive department stores in the world.
London is famous for its parks which are huge and beautiful. In their free time a lot
of people have a rest, do sports, walk, cycle or have picnic there. The most famous
is Hyde Park.
The symbols of London are the double–deckers and the black cabs. The double
deckers are red, two-storey buses which are used in the local transport and as
sightseeing buses for tourists too. The black cabs are the traditional taxis of
London. The drivers are trained carefully for a long time and they act like tourist
guides too if the passenger requires it.
London has a special atmosphere because of its historical sights and monumental
buildings and palaces, so it is one of the top tourist attractions all over the world.
