LET’S READ ACTIVITY 2 ON PAGE
107-109, “ AN EXCERPT FROM THE
LITTLE PRINCE”.
The most basic definition of sacrament is true about
Jesus Christ. Through the Incarnation, God became
human in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the first and most
important physical embodiment of God and that is why
He may also be called a sacrament of God.
• We use the term primordial
sacrament of God to describe Jesus
Christ. Primordial here means “first
and most important.”
THE PRINCIPLE OF
SACRAMENTALITY
Sacrament in general sense,
is any material or sensible
reality that makes present a
spiritual reality.
THE PRINCIPLE OF
SACRAMENTALITY
➢ Jesus Christ, the Primordial Sacrament of God
➢ The Church, the Fundamental Sacrament of Jesus
Christ in the World
➢ The Seven Sacraments of the Church
Christ is truly and physically present in the
world today through His Body, the Church. The
Church continues Christ’s work and mission of
preaching the Good News of salvation to all.
The Church shares in Christ’s mission in a
special way through the seven ritual sacraments.
Each of the seven sacraments of the Church is a
physical or material reality that makes Jesus
Christ present in our life.
THE SEVEN SACRAMENTS
Are the “saving symbolic acts or visible signs arising
from the ministry of Christ and continued in, by, and
for the Church, which we received or celebrated in
faith, fashions us into likeness to Christ in His Paschal
Mystery, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
( CFC no. 1531)

BAPTISM
✓Is the First Sacrament to be received.
✓The door of faith
✓Through Baptism, we were born “of water and Spirit” and made a new
creation in Christ.
✓The essence of the Sacrament is the pouring or immersion in water
and the bishop, priest or deacon pronouncing , “ I baptize you in the
name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
BAPTISM
• Comes from the Greek word that
means “to plunge” or “to immerse”.
The symbolic plunging and rising up
again from the water reminds us
that a new Catholic enters into
Christ’s death and then rises to a
new life of grace.
SYMBOLS IN BAPTISM
• Water – water represents cleansing
• Oil – in ancient world, oil was used to anoint kings
and queens to show they were set apart
• White garment – Purity, means putting on Christ,
similar to a bride
• Candle – Christ is the light of the world and so we
should be as well

✓The Sacrament that bestows on the person the grace to
grow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit and strengthen us in the
mission to follow Christ.
✓The essential symbolic action in confirmation is the laying
on of hands by the bishop and the anointing of the
confirmand with chrism or holy oil.
✓Confirmation means to confirm our Baptism.
CONFIRMATION
• A sacrament in which the Holy Spirit
is perfected in those already
baptized in order to make them
strong and perfect Christians and
soldiers of Jesus Christ.
CONFIRMATION
• Confirmation confers a sacramental character that
cannot be erased and that predisposes the Christian
person to receive the very life of God, and his divine
protection.
• Confirmation completes the baptismal grace. The
Christian participates now fully in the body of Christ
with rights an obligations of a spiritual and temporal
character.
• The Confirmed person is compelled to witness the
Christian faith with conviction by word and deeds.

at the age of 7 or 8.

• Christ instituted the Eucharist during a Passover
meal held at the Last Supper as a memorial of his
Death and Resurrection.

Missal was published by Pope Pius V.

SICK
ANOINTING OF THE
SICK
✓Sacrament that offers the gift of healing and hope to those who are
critically sick
✓It imparts the gifts of consolation, peace, spiritual strength and
empowers the sick person
✓Also offers forgiveness
✓This sacrament consists of the imposition of holy oil on the forehead
and hands of the sick person accompanied by prayers led by the priest
or bishop.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
• The sacrament encourages those who are sick to
overcome the alienation caused by illness.
• Jesus continues to bring healing through the
prayers of the Church, and through the sacraments,
especially the Eucharist and the Anointing of the
Sick.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
• In the Middle Ages the sacrament was administered
only to the dying and was called Extreme Unction –
“the Last Anointing.”
• Viaticum – is the final reception of the Eucharist.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
• Since Vatican II, this sacrament
is celebrated for those suffering
from serious illness, for the
elderly, for those facing major
surgery -- and for the dying.

MATRIMONY
✓The rite in which a man and a woman make a covenant before God
and the Church to love each other and commit to each other fully as
husband and wife unto death.
✓Sacrament of God’s love for His people summoning the man and
woman to always live in love and faithfulness
✓Instrument of God’s life-giving love to others
✓The minsters of the Sacrament of Matrimony are, in fact, the bride and
the groom
• Marriage is a sacred covenant --
that is an agreement between
the husband and wife, and
between the couple and God.
MATRIMONY
• From the time of creation, marriage has been an
institution established by God, not by man.
• Sacramental marriage was modeled on the
relationship between Christ and the Church
MATRIMONY
• The goodness of Marriage includes:
-The procreation of children.
-The chastity of the spouses and their fidelity to each
other.
-The indissoluble union of marriage.
THE ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF MATRIMONY
IS THE MUTUAL CONSENT TO MARRY
• The words of consent must be freely given.
• Catholics must marry in the presence of a priest or
a deacon, and in the presence of two witnesses.
• The spouses themselves are the ministers of the
sacrament.

• Since marriage is considered a sacred sacrament, the
Catholic Church doesn't believe in divorce and considers it
a sin.
• A divorce holds that the spouses were previously married
but chose to legally separate. An annulment, however,
legally determines the marriage was never valid.
HOLY ORDERS
✓ the Ordained receives the gift of the Holy Spirit who gives him a
sacred authority that is conferred upon him by Christ through the
Bishop.
✓The Holy Orders has 3 degrees
1. Episcopate ( Bishops)
2. Presbyterate ( Priests)
3. Diaconate ( deacons)
HOLY ORDERS
• A call by God to serve the Church in a very special
way.
• Essential rite includes: the laying on of hands by the
bishop accompanied by a special prayer of
consecration.
• An indelible spiritual character is conferred on the
ordained man.

HOLY ORDERS
✓ In the priestly ordination , a bishop calls the future priests by name.
the priest then promises obedience to the bishop and his successor.
The bishop then lays hands upon the priest and pronounces the
words of consecration.
✓The sacramental action leaves an “indelible ink” on the priest that can
never be lost, further, empowering him to proclaim the Gospel,
administering sacraments and celebrate the Holy Eucharist.
