Energy in Science Lesson Plan

Exploring the Basics of Energy Sources

Subject(s): Science

Age/Level: Year 4

Learning Objectives:
● Define the meaning of energy.
● Describe various sources of energy through observation using different
media.
● Explain various forms of energy with examples.

Lesson Starter (5 minutes):

Begin with a simple question: “What do you think energy is?” Allow students to
share their thoughts. Prompt them by asking about things that need energy to
work, like lights, cars, or toys. Write their contributions on the board to capture
their ideas.

Introduction to New Material (10 minutes):

Introduce the concept of energy by explaining it as the ability to do work or
cause change. Use relatable analogies, such as a toy car needing batteries
(electric energy) or food giving us energy (chemical energy). Discuss the idea
that energy comes from different sources, including the sun (solar energy) and
wind (wind energy), ensuring that students grasp these foundational concepts
clearly.

Main Teaching Activities:

Class Activity (10 minutes):

Organise students into small groups and provide them with pictures or videos
showing different sources of energy, such as solar panels, wind turbines, and
batteries. Ask them to discuss in their groups what type of energy each source
produces and how it is used in everyday life. Each group will present one source
of energy to the class.

Guided Practice (10 minutes):

Facilitate a discussion based on the group presentations. Ask guiding questions
to reinforce their learning, such as “How does solar energy help us?” or “What
happens when we don't have batteries for our toys?” Provide immediate
feedback on their understanding and correct any misconceptions they may have
about energy sources.

Independent Practice (5 minutes):

Give students a worksheet where they have to draw one source of energy they
learned about today and write a sentence describing how it is used. This will help
them consolidate their learning independently.

Common Misconceptions:
One common misconception is that energy only comes from electricity. Explain
that while electricity is one form of energy, there are many other sources, such as
solar, wind, and fossil fuels, that provide energy for different purposes.

Closing (5 minutes):
Summarise the key points discussed in the lesson: the definition of energy,
different sources, and forms of energy. Encourage students to think about how
they use energy in their daily lives and why it is important.

Homework/Extension Activities:
Option 1: Assign a quiz on the types of energy sources and their uses.

Option 2: Ask students to find an object at home that uses energy and explain
how it works or what type of energy it uses. They can bring their findings to share
in the next class.

Differentiation Strategies:
● For advanced students, encourage them to research more complex
energy sources, such as geothermal or nuclear energy.
● For struggling students, provide visuals and definitions for different energy
types to aid comprehension.
● Allow students to work in pairs during group activities for additional
support.
