Report on Educational Tour to Cooch Behar Rajbari

Introduction
On 13th June 2023, the students of the English Department at Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya
visited Cooch Behar Rajbari, a historical and architectural marvel located in Cooch Behar,
West Bengal. This educational tour aimed to provide the students with an immersive learning
experience, enhancing their understanding of historical architecture, cultural heritage, and the
legacy of the Cooch Behar royal family.
Participants
The tour was attended by the students from the English Department, accompanied by three
faculty members:

Itinerary
10:00 AM: Departure from Dewanhat Mahavidyalaya
11:00 AM: Arrival at Cooch Behar Rajbari
11:15 AM - 02:00 PM: Guided tour of the Rajbari
02:00 PM - 03:00 PM: Lunch break
03:30 PM: Departure from Cooch Behar Rajbari
The Tour
 Arrival and Initial Impressions
The group arrived at Cooch Behar Rajbari at 11:00 AM and was greeted by the
majestic view of the palace. The Rajbari, also known as the Cooch Behar Palace, is a
prominent example of classical Western-style architecture in India. It was built in 1887
during the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan.
 Guided Tour
The tour began with the grand Durbar Hall, featuring an impressive display of
chandeliers, intricate woodwork, and royal portraits.
 Architectural Highlights
The faculty members explained to the students the architectural features of the
Rajbari, highlighting the following:
Italian Renaissance Influence: The palace design was inspired by the classical style of
the Italian Renaissance, evident in its Corinthian columns and ornate verandas.
Marble Hall: A significant attraction with its pristine white marble flooring and walls
adorned with antique mirrors and artwork.
Banquet Hall: Showcasing vintage furniture, silverware, and a collection of royal
artifacts.
 Historical Significance
The guide provided a comprehensive overview of the history of the Cooch Behar
royal family, their contribution to regional development, and their patronage of art and
culture. The students learned about the socio-political impact of the Rajbari and its
role in the historical context of Bengal and India.
 Museum Visit
The students visited the Rajbari Museum, which houses an extensive collection of
artifacts, including royal costumes, armoury, manuscripts, and photographs. The
teachers explained to the students the importance of the preservation of heritage sites
and the importance of historical research.
 Conclusion and Reflections
The tour concluded with the students sharing their reflections on the visit. They
expressed their fascination with the architectural grandeur and historical richness of
Cooch Behar Rajbari. The faculty members emphasized the importance of such
educational tours in enriching the academic curriculum and fostering a deeper
appreciation for cultural heritage.
