ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The 6 month Period I spent with the Multichoice Nigeria Acme team during my SIWES will

forever be a memorable one .It was an amazing experience I learnt a lot and grew

exponentially in knowledge and experience within the six months program. Within this six

months program as I was introduced to a few work concepts and dimensions. –

Understanding the functionalities of an organizational unit(OU) in an Active Directory

(AD),Understanding how domains work on Windows 10 Workstations and Laptops ,learning

various commands used on windows 10 systems to perform various tasks , I also learnt about

the basics of networking with the group. The training in basic networking has given me an

idea of what I need to become an effective Network engineer and reliable IT support

Technician

This 6 month program helped me understand how to work with a team and the need for both

effectiveness and efficiency in the work place. I learnt humility, discipline and it also taught

me how to work on a schedule. I learnt how to relate with much older people and learnt a lot

from them.

My SIWES experience would have not been possible without the help, assistance and

guidance of the following people:

1) The Lord God who has given me the strength and capacity to consistently go to work

without falling sick ,falling prey to accidents and helping me secure a good place for

my internship before the month of January ran out .

2) Babcock University who allowed me to undergo this 6 month training and offered us

support with supervisors who came to inspect us to ensure that we were working to

the excellent standard they set for us at school

CIS-D022/iv

3) The head of the multichoice IT department Mr. Ifeanyi. Who did his best to ensure

that I settled down Quickly and made it fairly easy for me to transit into a formal

work environment from the usual routine I am used to within the fore walls of my

Institution.

4) My two team leads Mr. Onyeka and Mr. Ayomide Adekunle. Who never stopped

assigning me difficult tasks that required me to think critically, which helped me grow

as a young it technician within the company. I am grateful

5) And finally My supervisor Mr. Orukpe Ighodalo who took it upon himself to train me

and give me lectures on certain concepts I was unfamiliar with . going as far as giving

me a few sites with Research materials that will help me with work related functions .

I will never forget your input into my growth as a person sir I appreciate you a lot.

CHAPTER ONE:

INTRODUCTION OF SIWES

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES

SIWES is an acronym for Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme .It was established in

the year 1973 with the aim of improving the standard of education in Nigeria in order to

achieve the needed technological advancement of students in Nigerian Universities,

Polytechnics and other tertiary institutions and to also prepare students for life after school.

SIWES was solely funded by ITF (Industrial Training Fund ) during its early stage till it

became difficult to continue due to lack of economic capacity, after this stumbling block the

responsibility as now shared between the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the Federal

Government .The Federal Government took over the funding of the program and the ITF was

involved with the management of disbursed funds by the Federal Government so the program

be came Sustainable.

SIWES (Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme ) is a scheme for duration of 6 months

aimed at giving students exposure, experience , and knowledge of practical aspect of all that

have been taught in the various levels of tertiary Institution . SIWES is done after the first

year in polytechnics and after the second/third year of in universities depending on the

institutions.

CHAPTER 3:

RESPONSIBILITIES AND PARTICIPATIONS:

RESPONSIBILITIES AT MULTICHOICE NIGERIA :

During my time with Multichoice Nigeria , I had the opportunity to work with the IT support

team and with Team of Network Engineers and I was given the following responsibilities :

1) Providing support for agents who have issues with their systems: I work at acme the

branch which has the largest workforce in all of multichoice Nigeria .whenever an

agent has a complaint with the performance of their desktop it is my responsibility too

respond to them. And ask them crucial questions about when the fault started and how

long it has lasted.

2) Using troubleshooting techniques: In special situations where you cannot accurately

deduce the fault of the system from the complaint of the Agent/Users complaints . It is

my responsibility to use my many troubleshooting techniques such as: BIOS

Diagnosis, checking for Physical damage, using CHKDSK command. ETC.

3) Formatting and Preparing Systems: Many times I have to format some existing

systems because of file corruption or difficulty to update Existing version of Windows

10 currently on the system.

4) Patching agent devices that are struggling to pick Internet/Data from the switch .

5) Resolving trust relationship issues : these are issues that occur when a system

(Desktop or Laptop) has been off the LAN too long and it is automatically removed

from the LAN .it is resolved by the use of an HIRENE flash to forcefully change the

Participation

During my time with Multi-choice Nigeria I was privileged to work with some of the

team members in some important projects that gave me some hands on knowledge in the
CIS-D022/6

field , These projects also helped in maintaining some of the companies IT infrastructure ,

helped in increasing efficiency of all the Agents/Users Systems and finally helped with

fortifying security features on agents/users systems .

1) Cable management Project : In Multi-choice we practices star topology so all the

devices are all connected to a central switch room within this switch room we have a

few Patch panels these patch panels are used to patch LAN cables from labelled LAN

ports to their respective switch ports. As a member as the IT support team we were

asked during the month of February this project was done to help identify Cables that

are not Incorrectly patched from the Patch panel to the switch . in multi-choice we

prioritise not just efficiency but orderliness and we apply that same principle too our

switch room .

IMAGES OF AN IMPROPERLY PATCHED CABLE.

CIS-D022/7
CIS-D022/8

IMAGES OF SOME CORRECTLY PATCHED CABLES

2) Cable maintenance project : This project was similar too the cable management

project but the major difference is that this project is concerned with the manner the

LAN cables are patched to the LAN ports from the users end and how the monitor

and Desktop power cables are also placed at the users end .
CIS-D022/9

IMPROPERLY PLACED CABLE.

CIS-D022/10

PROPERLY PLACED CABLES

3) Compliance Project: In Multi-choice we have Certain standards that our

workstations (Laptops and desktops) must always meet. when a system fails to reach

these criteria the system gets flagged for non-compliance. At the end of each month

all systems that have been flagged for non-compliance are compiled and we are to

work on them.

Criteria of multi-choice systems

1) Windows version 22h2

2) Windows Edition Windows 10 Enterprise

APPLICATIONS CRITERIA:

1) ADAPTIVA VERSION 8.1

CIS-D022/11

2) CLARITY VERSION 3.0

3) FLEX NET VERSION 21.1

If any system falls below this criteria, in any functionality it will be escalated to the it support

team and the system will be flagged for non-compliance. Once the system has been escalated

at the end of the month all escalated systems will be collated and worked on. To resolve the

non-compliance issue, you update the system if any of the system features falls below the

Companies Standard. And if it’s the applications that fall below standard you update them if

they are present on the system or download them when they are missing.

4) Encryption Project: During my 6 month tenure at Multi-choice Nigeria . A directive

came from the head office of the multi-choice Group in South-Africa, that they will no

longer be renewing their license with the anti-virus and protection app call MCAFEE .

that from now on we will now be making

CIS022/0023

use of BITLOCKER , so we were given the BITLOCKER encryption project and I was

lucky enough to be a member of the encryption team .

ENCRYPTION PROCESS

1) Remove MCAFEE by using the endpoint MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL

2) Once MCAFEE is successfully removed restart the system

3) Run command prompt(CMD) as an administrator and type manage-BDE- computer

status to check if BITLOCKER is completely decrypted

4) Run Power-Shell command getmpcomputerstatus to check if decrypting process is

underway.
CIS-D022/12

CHAPTER 4:

WORK EXPERIENCED AND KNOWLEDGE GAINED

At multi-choice Nigeria I was given the opportunity to learn work with numerous people and

experts who exposed me to a wide range of concepts and techniques in terms of IT support

work and Networking.

4.1WINDOWS DOMAIN AND ACTIVE DIRECTORIES

CIS-D022/13

In multi-choice our staff make use of some of the very helpful and useful windows extensible

tools such as and domain and Active directories.

4.1.1 What is an Active Directory

Active Directory is a Microsoft (windows) Directory service that manages the companies

Network users , computers and resources .in simple terms it is Centralized database that

stores Users , their Passwords and Access Rights .

Uses of the Active directory

1) User Authentication

2) Resource Management

3) Directory Services such as Password reset Computer name assignment .

4.1.2 What is a Domain

A domain is a group of computers that are administered as a single unit .It works together

with the AD to manage company computers , users and resours from a central location .It

allows users to access Network resources and services and shares data from anywhere within

the domain.

4.1.3 How to set up domain and Active directories .

NOTE: To Active directories and domains the AD DS (ACTIVE DIRECTORY DOMAIN

SERVICE) has to be installed on a server this however was not handled in Nigeria but in the

head office of Multi-choice which is at ZA (i.e South Africa ).

How to set up active directories

CIS-D022/14

1) Install Active Directory Domain Service (AD DS) role on a server computer this

is done in SA(South-Africa)

2) After installing the AD DS ROLE, the server must be prompted to a domain

controller through [ACTIVE DIRECTORY DOMAINS SERVICE

COFIGURATION WIZARD] This can only be done in the Head office at

SA(South-Africa).

3) Use Active Directory Administrative centre to configure the domain settings.

4) Create Users, Groups and Computer in active Directory .through the AD

administrative centre through the ad administrative centre.

How to set up Domains on user end

This is usually done immediately after a system has been prepared and is almost ready to be

deployed.

A system is added to the Multi-choice domain through the following steps :

1) Navigate to computer management and click on manage local users and groups

and ensure your LAN cable is plugged to the systems LAN port.

2) Once that is done left click administrator account an click on enable account after

that click on apply and then ok

3) When this is done rename admin account to AF_admin and give it the standard

password .

4) After this we navigate to computer settings

5) Navigate to about system

6) After that click on rename PC advanced once that is done there are a few things

that must be done .

CIS-D022/15

7) In step 4 of the how to set up an Active Directory. Create a computer name for

said device . in multi-choice we have naming convention. 23 BRANCH-DEPT

SYSTEM NUMBER for example . lets say I am to add a system that is going to

be used by the credit control department to domain. This will be Named on the

active directory as :

23 ACMW –CCTRL 112

23=Multi-choice reference number for all other African countries except South Africa .

ACM= Branch where the system will be ACM stand for Acme the branch where I Worked .

W= Desktop workstation

CCTRL= A department within the Branch called Credit control.

Once device name has been set on the Active directory. Change device name on the rename

Pc advanced page.

8) Set domain name to af.ds.naspers.com on the system and restart the system. then

the users system will be set on the domain af.ds.naspers.com.

4.1.4 EXPLANATION ON WHAT AD’S AND DOMAINS WORK

So the AD helps us to manage our users properly from the it room and makes it easier

for us to engage in things like password reset ETC.

CIS-D022/16
CIS-D022/17

One user can work on two different devices .

Devices names on the Active Directory.

CIS-D022/18

Users on the Active directory .

Device name on users end of the system.

CIS-D022/19

4.1.5 DEALING WITH TRUST RELATIIONSHIP ISSUES:

Trust relationship issues are issues that occur when a users devices mostly laptops (from my

experience is kept away from the LAN Network for too long .Because of this the computer

name is automatically removed from the Active Directory and disabled

HOW TO RESOLVE TRUST RELATIONSHIP ISSUES

Here we use a special type of flash (HIRENE FLASH) to boot the system . we use that flash

to clear the password on that system . once that is done . Delete the systems current computer

name from the Active Directory and create another one .

Once that rename the pc on the users device.

4.2WORKING WITH WINDOWS COMMAND PROMPT

The command prompt is a program that is used to perform entered commands and perform

advanced administrative functions.

Commands we use consistently in multi-choice.

CIS-D022/20

1) IPCONFIG: This command helps to display the current network information .for

your our adapters, which are default gateway, ip addresses and subnet masks .

OUTPUT GIVEN WHEN USING THE IPCONFIG COMMAND .

2) PING: The ping command is used as a trouble shooting tool. A tool that is used to

resolve Network issues .

CIS-D022/21

PING COMMAND USED ON A SYSTEM IT IS USED BY TYPING THE PING

COMMAND AND THE IPV4 ADDRESS OF THE DEVICE THAT THE

COMMAND IS BEING USED ON .

3) SFC/SCANNOW COMMAND :SFC here stands for (System File Checker ) this

command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files command
CIS-D022/22

can only be run by people with administrator accounts .

SFC SCANNOW COMMAND IN USE.

CIS-D022/23

4) CHKDSK COMMAND : This command examines disk space and disk use and

provides a status report specific to each file system.

4.3 INTRODUCTION TO BASICS OF NETWORKING

In multi-choice I had the opportunity to work with a few Network engineers that

helped me understand networking a little bit more about networking principles .

I was taught about the following things.

4.3.1 NETWORK DEVICES AND TOPOLOGY USED IN MULTICHOICE NIGERIA

Network devices used in multi-choice ;

CIS-D022/24

1) LAN cables: other wise known as Ethernet cables these are cables that allow connect

from Network switches and routers /Access points to users device be it laptop or

desktop .

2) Routers/access points(AP): A router is a device that manages traffic between networks by

forwarding data packets to their intended IP addresses, and allowing multiple devices to

use the same internet connection .

3) Switches: These boxes are network devices which provides a network connection for end

devices such as PC’s be it laptop or desktop . In multichoice Nigeria we have 2 vendors

for our switches 1) Cisco switches which we use to forward data packets 2) D-link which

is our voice Switch

4) Patch-panels: these are used to patch LAN cables from their perspective LAN ports to the

Network switch.

TOPOLOGY USED:

In multi-choice we use star topology .

STAR TOPOLOGY: All devices are connected to a central device creating the star

model in Multi-choice Nigeria our LAN cables are patched to their respective LAN ports

which are then patched to the central switches through the patch panels

4.3.2 UNDERSTANDING THE OSI MODEL AND THE TCP/IP MODEL

CIS-D022/25

THE OSI MODEL:

Notes: It goes from downward to upward there are 7 layers within this model. A simple trick

to memorise the Model is:

All People Seem To Need Data Processing.

Notes on each layer of The OSI MODEL .

1) Physical layer :This is the layer that controls how the data will be transferred over

the physical medium on a network channel Examples of devices acting on the

physical Layer are :hubs , repeaters ,modems , cables ECT.

2) Data-link layer: This layer has too do with transferring data between nodes in a

network . it also ensures that data is formatted the correct way .and takes care of error

detection through (“mac addresses” and “Ethernet Frames” ) Examples of devices

Operating on this layer are Switches .

CIS-D022/26

3) Network Layer: This Layer ensures connectivity and Path Selection .This is where

ipv4 and ipv6 addresses operate.

4) Transport Layer: This layer transfers data between users, providing reliable data

transfer services to the upper layer . Transmission control protocol(TCP) and User

Datagram Protocol(UDP) both operate on this layer .

5) Session Layer : This layer takes care of Establishing, managing and termination of

session between two host

6) Presentation Layer : This is layer ensures that the information is readable for the

application layer

7) Application layer : ensures there is inter application communication on devices here

is where the (HTTP and the FTP operate ).

CIS-D022/27

THE TCP/IP MODEL:

Note: The TCP/IP model is a summarised version of the OSI model it possess 4 layers

namely the Network Access Layer , The Internet Layer, the transport Layer and the

application layer .

The Network Access Layer comprises of both the physical layer and the data-link layer of the

OSI model.

The Internet Layer performs similar tasks to the network layer in OSI model using ip packets

and ipv4 and ipv6 addresses for host device identification, Network connectivity and

communication within the network.

CIS-D022/28

Transport Layer performs same tasks as the Transport layer in the OSI model still performs

tasks with either the TCP or the UDP.

The Application layer in the TCP/IP model comprises of the session , presentation and

application layer of the OSI model .

4.3.4 IP ADDRESSES, IP ADDRESS ROUTING AND SUBNET MASKS .

Internet Protocol (IP) determines where we are going to send packets by looking at

destination IP address within the IP packet

IP uses IP packets to carry information .

COMPONENTS OF AN IP PACKET:

1) Protocol: Here you find which protocol the packet is using. Between

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

2) Source address: here you find the IP address that created the IP packet .

3) Destination address: This is the address of the device that should receive the IP

packet .

4) Data: This is the actual data that we are trying to get to the send .

IP ADDRESSES:

An IP Address is used to uniquely identify each network device on a network .

An IP address is 32-bit and consists of two parts the network part and the host part.

NETWORK PART HOST PART

24 BITS 8 BITS

CISD022/0041
NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK 8 HOST 8bits
8bits 8Bits BITS
CIS-D022/29

Example of an IP address showing its network and its host parts :

192.168.1.1 – this is a normal class c IP address

192.168.1 – Network address

1 – Host address

SUBNET MASKS :

The subnet mask helps you to identify which part of the device to identify which part of the

IP address is network and which part is host

192.168.1.1 -255.255.255.0

IP address- Subnet mask

The parts of the subnet mask that are 255 essentially mean that those parts of the IP address

are the Network parts and they are not subject to change

Then the part that shows 0 indicates that that part of the IP address that’s host part and it is

subject to change depending on the device within the network .

CLASSES OF AN IP ADDRESS:

We have 3 different IP address classes we can Work with:

1) Class A

2) Class B

3) Class C

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CLASSES :

CLASS A : The First bits always 0

CLASS B: The first bits are 10

CIS-D022/30

CLASS C: The first bits are 110

CLASS A : starts from 0.0.0.0

CLASS B: starts from 128.0.0.0

CLASS C: starts from 192.0.0.0

RANGES FOR EACH CLASS

CLASS A: 0.0.0.0-126.255.255.255

CLASS B: 128.0.0.0-191.255.255.255

CLASS C: 192.0.0.0-223.255.255.255

NOTE: The 127.0.0.0 between Class A and B is used together with the ping command as a

Loop back interface I.E something to check if your IP stack is ok .

PRIVATE/PUBLIC IP ADDRESSES :

Public IP address: Are used on the internet

Private IP address: Are used on your local Area Network and should not be used on the

internet .

DHCP

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a server processs that assigns IP addresses

from “pool” to network devices .

A cisco router can be used as a DHCP server .

CIS-D022/31

Configuring DHCP Through CLI of a Router .

4.3.5 CISCO IOS CONFIGURATION COMMANDS

Switches and routers require an Operating system to support their hardware .CISCO IOS is

the operating system that you will find on most switches and routers. Most of the

configuration is done using the CLI(command line interface ) .

SOME IMPORTANT CLI COMMANDS :

1) Enable command: moves switch/router from user mode to enable mode .

CIS-D022/32

2) show ip interface brief: is a very useful command. It shows us all the interfaces

and their status. This switch has 24x FastEthernet interfaces and 2x Gigabit

Interfaces.
CIS-D022/33

3) configure terminal : you use this command to get into the configuration mode .

4) Hostname : you use the host name command to change the name of the swtich or

the router to whatever you like .

4.3.4 CHALLENGES FACED

The major challenge I faced in multichoice was learning how to work with a team .
CIS-D022/34

CHAPTER 5:

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

5.1 SUMMARY

This report is on a portion of the significant tasks I did during my 6 months SIWES program

with Multichoice Nigeria .

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a curricular provision of the

universities in Nigeria, where students of most –Science based courses are given the

opportunity to work with a company, Industry or ministry that is related to their course of

study .This scheme has been a real benefit to me as I had the opportunity to learn about

things I had no idea about prior to the 6 month program .

I acquired new attributes which includes the ability to relate with people in a much more

friendly manner, how to be disciplined punctual , and more responsible and also how to

manage resources more effectively and efficiently .

5.2 CONCLUSIONS

My SIWES experience was a brilliant one since I had the opportunity to learn a parcel of new

things and I have the technical knowledge into what life after university will resemble .it

empowered me to work on friendly abilities through transformations I had with functioning

with my partners. I trust I have a more profound comprehension of my picked course of study

in regard to networking.
