ⅡStructure character
The pump is compact structure, small volume, lightweight, integrated herringbone gear
pair, large transmit torque and smooth run. Crankshaft is welding forged and light
weight without libration.
W-446 Single-acting Triplex Pump can be used widely in oilfield operation. Liner size
from 4 1/2"---6" is better-adopted piston structure for workover operation and low well
drilling operation.
Power End
Frame Frame is weld structure and anneal treatment is adopted to release weld
stress to improve rigidity and strength. Bearings of crankshaft and main bearings are
strengthened with ribs.
Crankshaft Large gear rim, pitmen and bearings are installed on the crankshaft,
Gear type of large gear rim is integrated herringbone. Inner hole of large gear rim and
crankshaft are interference match, and are fastened with bolts & lock nuts. Large ends
of pitmen are installed on the three eccentric axils of crankshaft through single-raw
short cylindrical roller bearings. While small ends are installed on the crosshead pins
through double raw long cylindrical roller bearings. Crankshaft is supported by two
double raw annular ball bearings.
Pinion shaft Pinion shaft is forge alloy steel. There is a herringbone gear, which

is middle hardness. In order to easy to repair, single raw long cylindrical roller bearing
is adopted, which is no baffle. The two ends of pinion shaft extend to outside of the
shell and pulley can be installed on each end of it.

Crosshead Crosshead is spherical graphite cast iron and has good wear resistance
performance. Top and bottom guide plate are adopted, and concentricity can be
adjusted through bottom plate plus spacer. Connection between crosshead and central
pull rod is flanged connection, which is pin-matched hole. This rigid connection can
ensure concentricity between central rod and crosshead. The central rod is connected
with piston rod through hub and this light hub can ensure reliable connection between
them.
Fluid End
Fluid end Cylinder is alloy steel forged. Through structure design, which is valve on
valve, can reduce cylinder volume and improve volume efficiency, Cylinder surface can
be coated nickel to improve its corrosion resistance performance.
Valve Assembly API 4# valve is used for 446 mud pumps. Suction valve is
interchangeable with discharge valve.
Liner and Piston For mud pump with piston structure, liner & piston size from 4 1/2"、
4 3/4"、5"、5 1/4"、5 1/2"、5 3/4"、6" and piston rod is conform to API 7K SA-2. Outer
diameter of liner for all sizes is same and liner is fixed with cylinder through square liner
head and bolts. Seal between liner and cylinder is rectangular rubber washer.
Suction outlet There are suction outlets on both end of suction pipe and to be
connected with 8″flange with O-ring 185X7 (GB/T3452.1).
Discharge outlet 3″ASME 900 flange is adopted on discharge pipe and gasket is
R31 (API).
Lubrication System
Pressure lubrication combining splash lubrication is adopted for power end. Pressure
oil pumped by gear oil pump in the oil tank is transmitted to crosshead, middle pull rod,
crosshead guide and bearings through lubrication pipe line. Working condition of gear
oil pump can be watched from pressure gauge in the back of the frame.

Ⅳ Installation and operation


Spray system :I t is necessary to equip the working pump with spray pump for cooling
and lubricating liner and piston, and with the pump are equipped the water box and
spray pipe, the connection face screw of water box is NPT 1 1/2, and that of spray pipe
is NPT 3/4.
When it is working, you should pay attention to the cooling fluid enough in the
liner and piston. And the interrupt of cooling fluid will damage the piston rubbers and
the liners. Cool fluid is on the base of water adding antirust.
Spray pump must be started earlier than mud pump or at one time least, otherwise
piston or liner will be damaged. And check the spray pipe often to ensure that fluid
spurt out on the piston directly.
Pulsation Dampener Pulsation dampener is effective assistant equipment to make
pressure on power end smoothly and reduce pulsation on the discharge manifold.
Security valve Security valve should be equipped on discharge manifold to avoid
system pressure rising sharply to damage mud pump and manifold due to over load.
Mud pump base The installment of the pump must be done horizontal and the
strength must be enough so that it can bare the weight of the pump itself and weight
the pump produce when it works. The pump must be put horizontally prevent frame
being distorted or declined.
Transmit No matter tri-angle belts or multi-row chain used from mud pump to prime
power should be installed carefully to ensure transmission liability to avoid stopping
work due to transmission accident.

Start and operation of the pump
1、 Preparation of power end your pump has been completely assembled and
tested by working overtime before being shipped to the field. The lubrication is
drained from the power end. Before operating the pump, the following must be
performed or checked.
When starting a new pump or restart a pump which has not been used for a long
time, before adding lubrication into the power end, you must open inspection door in
cover and check oil reservoir for possible accumulation of condensation & drain and
flush by removing the pipe plugs in each side of pump. Add the proper type and
quantity of lubrication into the power end, then drive the pump for several round by
hands, ensure the pump get a good lubricating in time after starting the pump
In winter: Please use N150 sulfur-phosphorous type medium EP gear oil and add
10% of 4# compounding antirust additive (Or Mild Ep 2# recommended by AGMA).
In summer: Please use N320# sulfur-phosphorous type medium EP gear oil and
add 10% of 4# compounding antirust additive (Or Mild Ep 6# recommended by AGMA).
Oil volume for adding: up to the high oil level of oil rod, about 146 liter.
After operating about 15 minutes, check the oil level again, stop the pump about 5
minutes to calm the oil. There may be some oil stopped on the crosshead and ram
cavities.
So add some oil when needed.

2. Preparation for fluid end


Check the cylinder, piston and valve of fluid end, ensure they have been installed
correctly, the discharge valve of drilling pump have been opened.
Before starting the pump, you must fill the cylinder with mud or water, in case of
the air cavity being taken place. For the pump the air cavity having been taken place,
you can not eliminate the air cavity under pressure, you must open the valve to pump
and run the pump in “small circulating” until all the air have been eliminated, in this
case, we can make the pump running smoothly and the life of the pump will be longer.
Check the safe pin, ensure the pin have been inserted to the proper pin hole of
cylinder for a special pressure. See the indication of safe valve in details.
Spray pump must be started earlier than mud pump or at one time lest piston or liner
will be burned. Before the start of the spray pump, pump must be filled with water to
avoid air cavity.

3. Operation after start-up
In order to let the liquid in the suction pipe catch the speed of the piston and avoid
the air cavity, it is better to speed up the pump slowly.
Under the natural suction, the highest speed of the pump is determined by the fill
factor in the stroke length, this limited speed is different in different cases, it is changed
according to the design and efficient pressure head, it still determined by the mud
(such as gravity, viscosity of mud and the air quantity in the mud), operator can judge
the running condition of the pump (good or the air cavity having been taken place or the
suction condition is not good), so as to take measures in time.
Check all the bearings of power end, the temperature and sound of guide plate,
the rising of oil temperature is less than 45℃.

4. Lubrication
Proper lubrication of the moving parts in any piece of machinery is the most
important single factor affecting its ultimate life. To obtain maximum trouble-free service
life from the power end of the pump, it is necessary to perform routine maintenance
care and inspection to insure the proper amount of clean lubricant is being provided.
The mud pump utilizes the controlled flow oil bath splash and pressure system to
lubricate the entire power end. The gear pump placed in the oil bank provide the
pressure oil to crosshead, extension rod, guide plate of crosshead and all the bearings
of the pump through oil line individually, so as to obtain the compulsory lubrication for
the pump. The working condition of the gear pump can be seen from the pressure
gauge at the post of the pump body.
Have a check of the oil level everyday when the pump works, make sure the oil
level gauge is at the full position.
There are sedimentation tanks at two sides of the crosshead of power end. the oil
splashed to the oil pool should be deposited. The oil discharge cover is at the two sides
of pump body under the inspecting door of crosshead, it should be checked once a
month, open the oil discharge cover on the two sides, discharge the sediment from
tanks, that will loss some lubricant, so you should add certain quantity of lubricant.
Have a check every 6 months. If there is any grind chip or corrosive compound in
the oil, discharge it completely, wash the oil pool and add new oil. The discharge spout
is just in the behind of the frame. When washing, pay more attention to the oil grooves
and oil chamber on cross head guide. Have a look at the position of the lubricant
periodically, there are humidity, water, dust and mud which will affect the oil, and you

have to change it often.

VI. Maintenance

1. Daily maintenance
1)Have a look at the oil level of the power end anytime when you stop the pump.
2)Check the liners and pistons when they are working to see if there is any obviously
wear and tear.
3)Check the cooling fluid of the cylinder liner and piston often, add it if need , change it
if dirty. Because the dirty one may sharpen the wear of cooling pump and short its life.
4)Check the nozzle of liners everyday to see if it is locked, and make sure the liners
and pistons have enough adequate cooling and lubricant supplement.
5)Several hours after you first start the pump you should have a look at the tight
moment of piston clamp.
6)Loose the piston rod clamp daily, and turn the piston quarter round then tight the
clamp in order to make piston wear symmetrically and prolong the life of liners and
pistons.
7)Check the pressure of the discharge pulsation dampener everyday to make sure it
meet the demand of the standard.

2. Weekly maintenance
1) Open the cap of valve box and clean the sundries on cap screws and cap flange
screws, and then put thread oil on cleaned screw avoiding screw abrasion, scrape and
bad mesh (lead base thread is advised).
2)Check rubber guide sleeves of valve guid and change them if they wear out.
Not-round or ellipse guide sleeve will make bad valve guide guiding function and speed
up the valves abrasion.
3)Check valves and seats abrasion condition and change the wear-out or damaged
seats. Tight the valve nuts if they are loose.
4)Change the liners and pistons if they are worn out or damage.
5)Change the pistons’ locking nut if they are damaged, rusted or unable to lock.

3. Monthly maintenance
1)Let out the dirty oil in the deposit pool of power end (under the cross head) per six
months and clean it, then re-fill it with new oil.

2)Always have a look at gaskets and seal rings of the power end. If broken, change it.
Fasten the bolt if it loose. Especially pay attention to the bolt on the pulley.
3)Check the gap between the guide plate and cross head and adjust it if the gap is too
large.
4)Check all double end bolts and nuts of fluid end including cap flange to cylinder,
cylinder to frame, liner seat to cylinder and keep them tightness enough.

4. Annual maintenance
About one or two years, check the tightness of crankshaft bearing, connecting rod
bearing, transmit shaft bearing, cross head bearing, cross guide plate. You should have
a throughout check if you find any problem.
VII. Storage
Power end: If you want to have the pump stop over a month, you should make the
pump lean to power end, then empty the oil grooves and deposit pool and clean
them.
Fluid end: After disassembling valves, pistons, piston rod and liners, thoroughly clean
all inner parts of cylinders and parts. Coat the cylinder valve and parts with
rust-assistant grease. Clean up the liner spray system and liner chamber and
inject some lubricant into liner spray system avoiding rust.
Check the pump monthly and rotate the gear once. Re-put rust-assistant oil if it is
necessary.

Restart after storage


You must have a thorough check to make sure the parts are good assembly and
installed rightly before you restart the pump. (No matter the pump is a new one or it has
been used). Please pay attention to the following items in order to prevent some
serious problems.
1. Open the covers of power end and fluid end and check the pump thoroughly, clean
all parts, machining surface and bearings insuring that all the parts are clean and good.
Add lubricant oil into power end to specified level. Add the oil into lubricant dispatch
grooves and make the oil flow into bearings.
2. Valves, pistons, liners and all parts of fluid end must be installed properly and have
a good condition. The bolts, nuts and universal joints should be tightened.
