ME-302 Heat and Mass Transfer

Time: 3:00 Hours Max. Marks: 40


Note : Attempt any five questions. All questions carry equal marks.
Assume suitable missing data, if any.
Q.1a)A plane composite slab with cross-sectional area of 1.0 m 2 is made
up of material ‘A’(thickness =100mm, thermal conductivity=60W/m-K)
and material ‘B’(thickness = 10mm, thermal conductivity = 2W/m-K).
Thermal contact resistance at interface is 0.003 m 2-K/W. The
temperature at open side of slab ‘A’ is 300 0C and that of at open side of
‘B’ is 500C. Determine: i) heat transfer rate through slab, ii) temperature
on both sides (left and right) of the interface.

Q.1 b) The outer surface of an electric wire (diameter = 2mm) is


maintained at 1200C. To increase the heat loss from the wire, it is
covered with a 2.5mm thick layer of insulation (thermal conductivity=
0.5W/m-K). The surrounding temperature is 250C and convection heat
transfer coefficient is 10 W/m2-K. Determine: i) Rate of heat dissipation
from the wire without insulation per unit length, ii) Rate of heat
dissipation from the wire with insulation per unit length, iii) thickness
of insulation for maximum heat dissipation, iv) maximum value of heat
dissipation per unit length

Q.2 a) The steady state temperature distribution in a 0.3m thick plane wall (as
shown in fig) is given by, T ( x )=600+2500 x−12000 x2 ;

Where T(x) is in 0C and ' x ' is in meter measured from left surface of the wall.
One dimensional steady-state heat conduction occurs in the wall along x-
direction. The thermal conductivity of the wall material is 23.5 W/m-K.
Determine: i) Left-side and right-side surface temperature of wall, ii) maximum
temperature and its location, iii) heat flux at the left and right side of the wall, iv)
volumetric heat generation in wall.

Q.2 b) Describe the physical significance of Fin effectiveness and Fin


efficiency. A very long 25mm diameter copper rod (thermal conductivity =
380 W/m-K) extends from a surface at 1200C. The temperature of surrounding air
is 250C and heat transfer coefficient over the rod is 10W/m2-K. Determine the
heat loss from the rod.

Q3 a) Air at 270C and 1 atm. flows over a heated plate with a velocity of 2 m/s.
The plate is at uniform temperature of 600C. What will be the heat transfer rate
from: i) first 0.2m length of the plate , ii) first 0.4m length of the plate. The width

Q3 b) A hot plate of 15 cm2 area is maintained at 2000C and exposed to air at
300C. When small side of the plate is held vertical, the convective heat transfer
rate is 14% higher than that when bigger side of the plate is held vertical.
Determine, the dimensions of the plate. [Given: At mean film temperature,
density of air =0.91 kg/m3; dynamic viscosity of air = 22.65x10-6 kg/m-s;
Thermal conductivity of air= 0.0331 W/m-K; coefficient of volumetric
expansion= 0.002577 K-1;Prandtl number=0.69; acceleration due to gravity =
9.81 m/s2].

Q.4 a) With the help of suitable curve, describe the various regimes of Pool
Boiling. [4][CO3]
Q.4 b) Water at 10°C enters at the rate of 0.01 kg/s into a tube of 20
mm inner diameter. It is to be heated to 40°C. There is a uniform heat
flux of 15 kW/m2 over the surface. Determine: (i) length of pipe needed
(ii) Tube temperature at outlet (Assume fully developed flow and
neglect the entrance effect). [Given: Specific heat of water = 4180 J/kg-K,
density of water = 997 kg/m3; thermal conductivity of water = 0.608W/m-K,
dynamic viscosity of water= 910x10-6 N-s/m2].

Q5 a) Steam in condenser of a steam power plant is to be condensed at a


temperature of 30°C with cooling water from a nearby lake. The cooling water
enters at 14°C and leaves at 22°C. The surface area of the tube is 45m 2 and
overall heat transfer coefficient is 2100W/m2-K. Determine: i)Mass flow rate of
cooling water, ii)Steam condensation rate in the condenser
[Given: Specific heat (water) = 4180 J/kg-K, latent heat vaporization of water at
30°C = 2430 kJ/kg]. [4] [CO4]
Q5 b) A chemical (specific heat=3.3 kJ/kg-K; flow rate= 20,000 kg/hr) enters a
parallel flow heat exchanger at a temperature of 120°C. The cooling water
(specific heat=4.186 kJ/kg-K; flow rate= 50,000 kg/hr) enters at a temperature of
20°C. The heat transfer area is 10m 2 and overall heat transfer coefficient is
1050W/m2-K. Determine: i) effectiveness of heat exchanger; ii) outlet
temperature of water and chemical.

Q6 a) Define: Irradiation, absorptivity, transmissivity, reflectivity. [4][CO5]
Q6 b) A window glass of 0.3 cm thick has a monochromatic transmissivity as;
τ=0 (0 ≤ λ< 0.3 μm) ;
τ = 0.9 (0.3μm ≤ λ ≤ 2.5 μm) ;
τ=0 ( λ > 2.5 μm)
Determine the transmissivity of the window for: i) Black Solar radiation at
5800K, ii) Black Room radiation at 300K.

Q7 b) A 5cm diameter sphere (1) at 600°C is placed near infinite wall (2) at
100°C. Both the surfaces are black. Calculate the radiant heat transfer between
