CSEC English A Paper 2 – Writing

Formats & Tips


1. Argumentative Essay

Definition: You take a strong stance on a topic and support it with logical reasons and
evidence.

Structure:
- Introduction: State your position clearly.
- Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph should have one main point with evidence/examples.
- Counterargument: Acknowledge opposing view and refute it.
- Conclusion: Reinforce your stance.

Tips:
- Use persuasive language and logic.
- Avoid emotional language.
- Back up points with examples or facts.

2. Persuasive Essay

Definition: You try to convince the reader to agree with your opinion or take action.

Structure:
- Hook: Catch reader’s attention.
- Statement of opinion.
- Supporting arguments.
- Call to action in the conclusion.

Tips:
- Be emotional and passionate.
- Use rhetorical questions, repetition, emotive words.
- Know your audience.
3. Expository Essay

Definition: You explain or inform about a topic clearly and factually.

Structure:
- Introduction: State the topic.
- Body: Present facts, statistics, and explanations in logical order.
- Conclusion: Summarize and highlight the importance.

Tips:
- Be objective and clear.
- Avoid opinions.

- Read and understand the passage.
- Identify key points.
- Write in one paragraph in logical order.
- Use one-third of original word count.

- Use your own words.
- Keep it factual and concise.
