10 in 20 in

Teachers need to print a lot of

learning materials for their students
such as modules and activity sheets
for their pupils. Miss Santos bought a
box of bond papers. Suppose in the
back portion of the box it says, 20 in
×18 in × 10 in.

What is the amount of space that is

enclosed in the box?

To solve the problem, follow the four

steps:

The Polya’s Four Step Process

Step 1 – Understand

a. What is asked in the problem?

b. What are given?

Step 2 – Plan

a. What is the formula will be used?

Step 3 – Solve

- Solution of the problem

Step 4 – Check
- Final answer

On the other hand, non-routine

problems can be solved in multiple
ways and strategies. The following
are some of the different strategies in
solving non-routine word problems.

 Look for a pattern.

 Guess and check.
 Work backward.
 Make a model or visualize the
problem.
 Break up the problem into
smaller parts and solve each part.

Example 1

Jessa has a box where she keeps all

her little toys. Its length is 3 in. Its
width is 4 in. Its height is 5 in. What
is the amount of space enclosed in
the
box?

Step 1 What is asked?

The problem is asking for the

amount of space that is enclosed in
the box.
Step 2 What are the given facts?

The dimensions of the box are 3

in, 4 in and 5 in.

Step 3 What is the strategy to use?

Using the formula is the
appropriate strategy to use.

Step 4 Write the answer.

V = lwh or
V = Axh (area of the base x
height)
V = [3 in × 4 in] 5 in
V = 12 in²× 5 in
V = 60 in³ or 60 cubic inches
V = Axh (area of the base x
height)
V = 12 in2 x 5 in
V = 60 in3
Answer: The volume of the box is
60 in³.
Example 2

Babies learn how to read letters at

home in so many ways using
different
strategies. One example of these is
by
using a wooden letter cube. If an
edge
of a wooden letter cube measures 5
cm, what is the volume of the cube?

To solve this, we have the following.

Step 1: Write the formula

appropriate to the given object.
V = s3 where s is the length of an
edge of the floor tiles

Step 2: Substitute s with the given

length.
V = 5 cm × 5 cm ×5 cm

Step 3: Multiply the numbers

V = 25 cm2 × 5 cm

Step 4: Write the cubic units after

your answer.
V = 125 cubic cm or 125 cm3
D. Discussing new Group Activity
concepts and practicing The teacher will group the pupils into
new skills. 5. The pupils will measure the actual
dimensions of the object then they
find its volume
Group 1: A ream of a bond paper.
What is the volume of the ream of
paper?

Group 2: Balikbayan box

What is the amount of space enclosed
in the box?
Group 3: Wooden coin bank.
What is the
amount of space enclosed in the coin
bank?

Group 4: Empty box

What is the amount of space enclosed
in the box?

E. Developing Mastery Directions: Solve the following word

(Lead to Formative problems. Show your solutions on your
Assessment 3) answer sheet. Copy and complete the
boxes below by writing the letter that
corresponds to the value below each
box.

A What is the amount of space
enclosed in a cargo truck with
dimensions of 2 m, 4 m and 2 m?

H Melissa’s bag measures 3 in wide,

16 in long and 9 in high. What is the
amount of space enclosed in her bag?

I A shoe box’s dimensions are 9 in, 20

in and 4 in. What is the amount of
space enclosed in the shoe box?

Today is Angela’s 81st birthday. She

received a gift from her grandchildren.
The gift was wrapped in a huge box.
The box is a cube with 7 inches on
each edge. What is the amount of
space enclosed in the box?
M The dimensions of a piece of wood
are 2 cm, 11 cm, and 7 cm. What is the
volume of the piece of wood?
F. Finding practical 1. You want to wrap a gift box for your 1. 480 cm3
application of concepts sister’s birthday. The box has a length 2. 343 ¿3
and skills in daily living of 8 cm, a width of 6 cm, and a height
of 10 cm. Before buying wrapping
paper, you want to know how much
space the box occupies. What will you
do?

2. You want to bake a square cake for

your family gathering. The cake pan
you will use has an edge length of 7
inches. You want to know the capacity
of the pan, what will you do?

G. Making Generalizations Okay class, do you understand our

and Abstraction about the topic? Yes, Sir!
Lesson.
Okay, very good!

To prove that you've learned in our

lesson, what is our topic all about?
It’s about solving routine and non-
routine problems involving the
volume of cubes and rectangular
prisms in real-life situations using
appropriate strategies and tools, Sir!
Very good!

What are the four steps of Polya's

process?
Sir, the first step is to understand,
second is to plan, third is to solve,
and lastly check and look back!
Very Good! It seems like you
understand our topic.
