Is just a leap of faith
Spread your arms and hold your breath
Always trust your cape.

For my wife Barb, and all the leaps of faith.

This book is also dedicated to the memory of Shari Khaja Dorresteijn. Her smile, energy, and passion for athletic
training are missed by all who knew her. Try to save us a seat.

“Your boy doesn’t know what he is in for.”
“Nobody would do anything if they knew what they were in for!”
That exchange is from one of my favorite movies (Milagro Beanfield War, 1988 Universal Pictures). It’s true; maybe
none of us would do anything if we knew what we were in for. Oh well. There is a kind of author’s amnesia between
editions where you forgot how hard these projects can be, so of course you say yes to another. Writing projects, by their
nature, are leaps of faith. They can devolve into love-hate relationships that oscillate between excitement and loathing.
Now that it is complete, I have time to think back and say, “Well that wasn’t so bad.” Truth be told, I love the way this third
edition has turned out. Good thing; this one was a long time in the making, and I have many people to thank for helping
it to finally see the light of day. With that in mind…
Thank you to all the instructors who thoughtfully have used earlier editions of the Athletic Training Student Primer
in their courses. Your kind feedback has been put to good use, and I hope you enjoy and use the third edition now that it
is here.
Thanks to all my current and former AT students (the gang). You never fail to represent our program well. Your will-
ingness to play along with a sometimes “out there” instructor is appreciated. Keep up the good work, and always “Dare
Mighty Things.”
A sincere note of appreciation to Scott Barker for his friendship, guidance, and willingness to serve as my technical
advisor for all things digital. Truth be told, his influence extends well beyond all things computer; you have official guru
status in my book.
Stephanie Trigsted is a young PhD with a very bright future. Thank you for your efforts on behalf of this project.
Someone needs to hire this one; she is the goods. I also wish to thank Lindsay Donath and Morgan Lange (2 of our best
and brightest) for their assistance at various stages of this project.
I have amazing colleagues in the Department of Kinesiology, the Athletic Training Program, and sports medicine com-
munity at University of Wisconsin–Madison. I cannot say enough about Shari Clark (WS), David Bell, Pat Hills-Meyer,
Jan Helwig, Julie Stamm, and all of my colleagues who on occasion drag me out to run, join me on the lake to paddle, or
free themselves up for a “research” day on the river or a trip to the Brewers game; thanks to all. A special note of thanks
to Dorothy Edwards and Gary Diffee for their support and interest in the Athletic Training Program during their time
as department chairs. As always, a nod to my grouchy friend Dr. Tim McGuine for his willingness to share his research
expertise, provide a willing ear, and most of all, for his friendship.
Thanks to my friends and colleagues across the athletic training profession. A special acknowledgement goes to every-
one at Boston University and AT Still University for making me part the crew. The professional discussions and friendship
are beyond valuable.
I would be remiss if I did not thank the folks at SLACK Incorporated, both past and present. Jennifer Briggs, John Bond,
Brien Cummings, Emily Densten, Michelle Gatt, and all the editors and production staff who have been flexible working
with a sometimes persnickety author on this long overdue project.
I am blessed with a loving and supportive family. My mom, siblings, and extended family are always a source of inspira-
tion and encouragement. My Pop may not be here, but he certainly guides me daily.
Lastly, I need to say a special thanks to my lovely wife Barb, who tolerates my busy schedule and is always there for
support. You are first team all spouse.
Andrew P. Winterstein, PhD, ATC is a distinguished clinical professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the
University of Wisconsin–Madison where he currently serves as the program director of the athletic training professional
preparation program. A graduate of the University of Arizona, University of Oregon, and UW–Madison, Dr. Winterstein
has been active in athletic training patient care and educational programming at UW–Madison since 1986.
Dr. Winterstein’s academic interests include: emerging technologies and their use in teaching and learning, medical
humanities and their application to athletic training education, organizational dynamics, educational interventions/
behavioral change, and patient-reported outcome measures following injury. His papers and abstracts have appeared in
a variety of athletic training and sports medicine journals, and he has been privileged to make numerous professional
presentations at state, regional, national, and international conferences.
In addition to this text, he is the coauthor of Administrative Topics in Athletic Training: Concepts to Practice, Second
Edition with Gary Harrelson and Greg Gardner and coauthor of The Athletic Trainers Guide to Differential Diagnosis: A
Visual Learning Approach with Sharon Clark.
Dr. Winterstein has received numerous awards, including the 2017 Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Educator Award,
2016 National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award, 2008 Great Lakes
Athletic Training Association Outstanding Educator Award, 2007 Wisconsin Athletic Trainers’ Association Outstanding
Educator Award, and the 2006 UW–Madison School of Education Distinguished Service Award. He and his colleagues
are 3-time winners of the NATA Educational Multimedia Committee award for educational innovations and have been
awarded the MERLOT Classics Award for exemplary online learning objects.
Andy enjoys fly fishing, standup paddling, watch collecting, reading, and writing. He resides in Madison, Wisconsin
with his wife, Barb.
I am once again indebted to the thoughtful professionals from around the country who provided insights into their
athletic training lives (for all 3 editions) so that I may provide students with a balanced view of this profession. Thank
you for your honest and thoughtful contributions. A sincere thanks to the young professionals who reflected on their own
student experiences in order to assist new students. I am excited that our profession continues to attract some of the best
and brightest.
These professionals listed below (young and not so young) represent the very best of what the profession has to offer.
These interactions have provided me with so much; your thoughtfulness is appreciated.
