The Music
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Introduction
Music has long been recognized as a powerful influence on human emotions, cognitive abilities, and
productivity. In academic settings, students often listen to music while studying, completing assignments, or
preparing for exams. Some believe that music enhances concentration and memory retention, while others argue that
it serves as a distraction. Given these differing perspectives, it is essential to examine how music truly affects
students’ academic performance.
This study aims to explore the impact of music on students’ ability to focus, retain information, and
perform academically. By analyzing the experiences of Junior and Senior High School students at Narvacan
National Central High School, this research seeks to determine whether music is a beneficial study aid or a
hindrance to learning. Understanding the role of music in academic performance can help students develop more
effective study habits and provide educators with insights into how learning environments can be improved.
Background Of The Study

Music has long been a significant part of human life, influencing emotions, behaviors, and cognitive
functions. In educational

experience. Sur studies suggest that music can either enhance or hinder
students’ productivity, depending on various factors such as genre, tempo, and individual preferences (Hallam,
2010).
Understanding the impact of music on students’ performance is essential because many students incorporate
music into their study habits. Some believe that listening to music while studying improves focus and retention,
while others argue that it serves as a distraction (Perham & Currie, 2014). Despite these differing perspectives, there
is still no universally accepted conclusion on whether music positively or negatively influences academic
performance. Conducting this study will help clarify the relationship between music and student productivity,
providing insights that could inform better learning strategies.
The primary issue that necessitates this study is the inconsistency in findings regarding music’s effects on
learning. Some researchers claim that background music enhances cognitive performance by reducing stress and
increasing motivation (Schellenberg, 2005), while others argue that it can interfere with working memory and
comprehension (Kämpfe, Sedlmeier, & Renkewitz, 2011). This inconsistency raises concerns about whether
students should be encouraged or discouraged from listening to music while studying. Additionally, with the
increasing availability of streaming services and personal devices, music has become more accessible, making it
even more crucial to understand its academic implications.
This study is set within the broader discussion of cognitive psychology, education, and musicology. It
explores the effects of different types of music on students’ academic performance, considering factors such as study
environment, task complexity, and personal learning styles. The research will review existing literature and collect
data to determine whether background music serves as a cognitive enhancer or a source of distraction. By doing so,
it aims to provide students, educators, and researchers with valuable insights into the role of music in academic
success.

Definition Of Terms
Music. Music refers to organized sound, including melodies, rhythms, harmonies, and lyrics, that is
intentionally created using vocal or instrumental methods. It is used in the study to assess its potential
influence on various aspects of student performance, including concentration and emotional response.

tasks, which may include measurable outcomes such as grades, test scores, project quality, participation
in class activities, and ability to meet educational goals.
Academic Achievement. Academic achievement is the level of success a student attains in their
education, typically measured by grades, test results, completion of assignments, and overall educational
progress. This term is used in the study to analyze how music may affect students’ academic results.
Cognitive Function. Refers to the mental processes such as thinking, memory, problem-solving, and
attention span. In this study, it is used to explore how music may impact students’ ability to retain
information, focus, and perform academic tasks effectively.
Emotional Response. Emotional response refers to the psychological and emotional reactions, such as

in novel ways. The study looks at whether exposure to music fosters or enhances creativity in students’
academic work.
Study Environment. Study environment refers to the physical and emotional atmosphere in which
students engage in learning activities. The study explores how music alters the study environment and its
subsequent effect on student performance.
Scope and limitation of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of music on the academic performance of Junior and Senior High
School students at Narvacan National Central High School. The data collection will be conducted among 18
randomly selected students from both Junior and Senior High School during the S/Y 2024-2025, representing the
study’s population.
