BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK

INTRODUCTION:

“EAT WELL, LIVE WELL”.

Children are the true wealth of our nation has todays

healthy child is tomorrows responsible citizen observed
India’s first prime minister, the future of nation rests on
healthy, protected, educated and well developed children.
Development of a healthy child is influenced by many factors
children also need protection, promotion nourishment and
proper environment to grow. Children of today cannot
develop to be responsible and protective citizens of tomorrow
unless an environment which is conducive to their social and
physical health is assured to them. Under 5year children are
the most vulnerable groups who are prone to may infective
diseases and nutritional deficiency. PEM is a fairly common
worldwide in both children and adults and accounts for about
2,50,000 deaths annually.

Malnutrition in all its forms includes under nutrition

(washing, stunting, underweight) inadequate vitamins or
minerals, overweight, obesity and resulting diet related non-
communicable diseases. The prevalence of under nutrition is
highest among children under five. Globally in 2020, 149
million children under five years were estimated to be stunted
(too short for age).45 million were estimated to be wasted
(too thin for a height). Around 45%of deaths among children
under five years of age are linked to undernutrition,
malnutrition mostly affects the low and middle income
developing countries. Undernutrition among under five years
children is a major public health problem in India. It is also
major cause behind infant mortality and morbidity but also
physical and mental disabilities.

6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY:

2
Malnutrition among under five children is a major public
health problem in India. UNICEF, in the year 2006, reported
that the causes of childhood malnutrition are insufficient diet,
frequent infections, poor breastfeeding practices delayed
introduction of complementary foods and inadequate protein
diet. In the UNICEF report of 2019, India is ranked 102 at of
a total of 119 countries. According to the national family
health survey 4(NFHS4), with regard to the prevalence of a
under five children. In India 35.7% under five children were
underweight, 38.4% were stunted and 21% were wasted
(Swaroop k s 2015). In India almost 60 million children are
under-weight nearly 50% of total deaths in the developing
countries occur among children under five years of age as
compared to less than 5% in developed countries.

Millennium development goal aims to reduce the

prevalence of underweight among under five children (park k
2007). In India gross malnutrition is a said to kill around
5,00,000 of our infants and children every year. This is quite
understandable in view fact that around 3-4 of our paediatric
population is suffering from one/another nutritional
deficiency.

Around 25%of the paediatric beds are occupied by

patients where major problem is malnutrition (Gupta S 2004).
Act of the total worlds under nourished children 80% lives in
20 countries. Malnutrition is regarded as the most widespread
condition affecting the health status of under five children.
Approximately 47% of the Indian children are underweight 1
in 3 adult women in India is underweight and therefore at risk
of developing babies with low birth weight. The government
of India has accepted the new WHO child growth standards,
which estimates severe malnutrition in children between 1
and 3 years of age to be 15.6% much above the current
estimate of 4.2% based on the IAP classification and 13.7%
among children between 3-5 years of age.

Globally in 2022,149 million children under five were

estimated to be stunted (too short for age),45 million were
estimated to be (to thin for height) and 37 million were
overweight or living with obesity, nearly half of deaths of
children under five years of age linked to malnutrition.

A survey conducted by the department of women and

children development in 2023 revealed that Bidar and Kolar

3
district had the highest share of children suffering
malnutrition.A total of 27,73,247 children under the age of 6
were weighed across Karnataka for the survey to identify
children suffering from malnutrition.

The key preventive measures suggested in the UNICEF

report for malnourished children were appropriate
complementary feeding with supplementary foods includes
powdered cereals puffed Bengal gram dhal and roasted
ground nut mixed with jaggery, these have been used for
treatment of malnutrition among children of various groups.
Children with mild to moderate malnutrition are best
managed in their own homes, kept under surveillance so as to
find out improvement or deterioration in their nutritional
status. Parents of such children could be enlightened about the
inadequacy in their child’s intake and be guided to correct it.
Hyderabad mixture was found beneficial in managing mild to
moderate malnutrition at home level.

During the health survey, it was found that there is a high

prevalence of malnutrition among children at Karbalapure and
so Hyderabad mixture was assumed to be the cheap and best
supplementary food in treating the malnutrition, which is
introduced by national institute of nutrition at Hyderabad.
Hence the researcher intends to evaluate the usefulness of
planned teaching program on the preparation and
effectiveness of the Hyderabad mixture by doing this study.

6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE:

Review of literature is an important source of development of

research project. It helps to gain deep insight into research problem
and provide information of what has been done previously. It helps
the researcher to be familiar with existing studies and provide basis
for methodology, tool for data collection and research design.

information of nutrients &recipe through health
professionals, the study concluded that nutrition
demonstrationn programme was found effective in
improving knowledge of mothers of malnurished children
about preparation of hyderabad mix recipe.

➢ A Randomized control study was conducted at rural areas

of soouth India. The aim of this study was “Impact of
home-based nutritional intervention program on nutritional
status of pre school children living in rural areas of south
India. The method of single blinded cluster randomized
controlled trail to evaluate the impact of intervention with
weight gain as the primary outcome, a cluster of 12 village
was randomized to intervention or control arms. A total of
253 under-weight pre-school children from 12 clusters
(villages)were randomized to intervention(n=127) and
control arm (n=126).The interventions was composed of
health teaching program and demonstration of nutritious
food preparation in addition to reular services provided

5
Anganawadi centers ,the anthropometric assessment was
carried out baseline and every month for a year, a
significant increases in in the mean weightkiilogram was
noted in intervention group (11.9 ± 0.98 to 13.78 +- 0.89)
compared to control group, this study concluded the
nutritional status of pre school children is found to be
improved by home based intervention.

➢ A Quasi experimental study was conducted in 2019 at

selected anganawadi, Puduchery “To assess the
effectiveness of Hyderabad mix on weight among
malnourished under five children. About 30 malnourished
under five children were enrolled in experimental and
control group using convenient sampling technique, this
study reveals that after administration of Hyderabad mix
there was significant improvement in the nutrition level in
experimental group.

➢ A Quasi experimental study was conducted in selected

visnagarthe aim of this study was “To assess the
