ECODEV ASSIGNMENT
1. What are the top 10 countries of the world with the highest population growth?
Afghanistan
Albania
Algeria
Andorra
Angola
Argentina
Armenia
Australia
Austria
2. Based on the data generated above, which countries belong to the top-3, then identify the different
economic problems these 3 countries are respectively experiencing.
Afghanistan - Since the takeover by the Taliban in 2021, the Afghan economy has contracted by 27 per
cent, leading to economic stagnation, according to UNDP. Unemployment has doubled and only 40 per
cent of the population has access to electricity. Sectors such as finance have “basically collapsed” and
there are no major sources of economic activity such as exports or public expenditure, leaving small and
medium enterprises (SMEs) and farmers as the lifeblood of the faltering economy.
Albania - The country faces several challenges, including migration, economic stagnation, and
underutilization of talent. The underutilization of educated individuals is also hindering productivity
growth and the returns from investments in education. Ensuring better integration of human capital into
the economy could provide a sustainable path toward development.
Algeria - Despite its economic potential, the country faces several obstacles, including high
unemployment rates, a significant informal economy, and limited economic diversification.
3. What are relevant flagship programs implemented by these three countries to address their economic
problems?
Afghanistan:
Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF): Managed by the World Bank, this fund supports
development projects across sectors like education, health, and infrastructure to rebuild the Afghan
economy.
National Solidarity Program (NSP): This program focused on empowering rural communities by providing
grants for local development projects, such as building schools, roads, and irrigation systems.
Citizen’s Charter Afghanistan Project (CCAP): A continuation of the NSP, this initiative aims to improve
access to basic services like water, electricity, and healthcare while promoting community-driven
development.
Albania:
Structural Reforms: Albania has focused on reforms to improve governance, enhance public service
delivery, and create a more competitive economy. These reforms aim to attract investment and boost
productivity.
Tourism Development: Recognizing the potential of its natural and cultural heritage, Albania has
prioritized tourism as a key driver of economic growth. Efforts include infrastructure development and
marketing campaigns to attract international visitors.
Agricultural Modernization: Programs to support farmers, improve irrigation systems, and promote
sustainable farming practices have been introduced to strengthen the agricultural sector.
Algeria:
Economic Diversification: Algeria has been working to reduce its dependence on oil and gas by
promoting sectors like agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. This includes policies to attract foreign
investment and support small and medium-sized enterprises.\
Hydrocarbon Sector Reforms: While diversifying, Algeria has also introduced reforms in its oil and gas
sector to improve efficiency and attract international partnerships.
Infrastructure Development: Significant investments have been made in infrastructure projects, including
transportation networks, housing, and energy facilities, to stimulate economic growth.
