Q.

1) (a) Define the following terminologies;

i. Coulomb
ii. Farad

(b) A cable car with an average mass of 1500 kg is used to transport passengers to the top
of the table mountain 1085 m high. The car travels a total distance of 650 m, at an
average velocity of 8 m/s. If the hoist has an efficiency of 75%, calculate;
i. the power input to the motor
ii. the cost of operating the cable car over a 12 hour day if it completes 4 return
journeys each hour. Assume the cost of electrical energy is 0.8 Rand/kWh.

Q.2) (a) A conductor made of copper and aluminium of equal lengths connected in series
is used to transmit current of 1500 A over a distance of 10 m. Take ρc = 0.017µΩm
and ρal = 0.028µΩm and calculate;
i. the resistance and voltage drop of aluminium conductor if its diameter is 20 cm.
ii. the diameter of the copper cable if it experiences a voltage drop of 1.5 V.

(b) A current of 3 A is produced in a single core cable at temperature 18o C when supplied
with 5 V. The temperature coefficient of copper at 0 o C is 0.00426 per o C
i. At what temperature will the copper cable have a resistance of 2.45 Ω?
ii. If the power dissipated in the cable is 160 W, calculate the current through the
cable at the temperature in (b) above.

the stator is 50 cm and its cross sectional area is 12 cm2 . The mean path length of the
rotor is 5 cm and its cross sectional area is 12 cm2 . Each air gap between the rotor and
stator is 0.05 cm wide with a cross sectional area of 14 cm2 (including fringing). The
