Course Description

The Power Systems Lab stresses student familiarity and experience with electrically-oper-
ated equipment. Students will be able to study all stages of the electrical network/grid:
generation, transmission and distribution. In the power generation stage, the student will
learn to start an alternator by using an excitation system and a drive motor. Generator load and no-load
characteristics and automatic synchronization will also be studied. Likewise, the transmission stage will
give the students the opportunity to measure and examine the transmission line characteristics in case of
no-load and the effect of different load types on the lines, the techniques of automated compensation and
finally some earth protection shall be investigated and implemented in the lab. Lastly, the student will
learn to configure and to identify the group of a transformer and understanding their significance.
