DRY LAB - Parallel and Series Circuits Lab

The document outlines a lab experiment using the DC Circuit Builder to construct and analyze series and parallel circuits with a 9V battery and 10-ohm bulbs. It includes procedures for measuring voltage drops, current, and bulb brightness, along with observation tables for data recording. Additionally, it poses discussion questions regarding the differences in voltage, current, and brightness between the two types of circuits.

Parallel and Series Circuits Lab

Go to the following website DC CIRCUIT BUILDER found on our D2l website:

Use the DC Circuit Builder to construct a Series Circuit with a battery set to 9V and Parallel Circuit with a
battery set to 9V. Analyze the Current with an Ammeter and Voltage with a Voltmeter.

PART A: Electrical Loads in a Series Circuit

Procedure

1. Construct the circuit shown below. Set the battery to 9V and the resistance of the bulbs to 10 ohms.

2. Measure the voltage drop across the battery, bulb 1 and bulb 2 and record in your chart. Record the brightness of the
bulbs in your chart.
3. Record the current leaving the battery “I total”.
4. Move the ammeter to position 1 and record the current.
5. Repeat step 4 for the ammeter placed at position 2 and record the current.

PART B: Electrical Loads in a Parallel Circuit

Procedure

1. Construct the circuit shown below. Set the battery to 9V and the resistance of the bulbs to 10 ohms.

2. Measure the voltage drop across the battery, bulb 1 and bulb 2 and record in your chart. Record the brightness
of the bulbs in your chart.
3. Record the current leaving the battery “I total”.
4. Move the ammeter to position 2 and record the current.
5. Repeat step 4 for the ammeter placed at position 3 and record the current.

Discussion Questions:
1. Describe the difference in potential difference “voltage” across the bulb in the series and parallel circuit. Why
do you think there is a difference? (2 marks)

2. Describe the difference in current in the series and parallel circuit as the current moves through each bulb.
Why do you think there is a difference? (2 marks)

3. Explain the difference in bulb brightness between the series and parallel circuit. Explain why the bulbs in one
circuit are brighter than the bulbs in the other circuit. (2 marks)
