BS EN 353‑2:2024
EN 353-2:2024 (E)
Introduction
This document is intended to act as a complementary standard for existing European Standards covering
other components used in personal fall protection systems.
The scope and the requirements are based on the philosophy that a guided type fall arrester including a
flexible anchor line is rated to sustain the maximum dynamic load generated in a fall from a height by the
mass of one person, including any equipment carried. This document provides requirements and test
methods for guided type fall arresters including a flexible anchor line used in personal fall protection
systems in accordance with EN 363:2018.

1 Scope
This document specifies requirements, test methods, marking, manufacturer’s instructions and
information and packaging for guided type fall arresters including a flexible anchor line forming a single
product. This anchor line is attached to an upper anchor point for vertical and inclined applications; for
horizontal applications, the anchor point can be located at the user’s foot level. Guided type fall arresters
including a flexible anchor line conforming to this document are components of one of the fall arrest
systems covered by EN 363:2018. Other types of fall arresters are specified in EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017
or EN 360:2023.

level as the anchor point. An example of the test apparatus is shown in Figure 10.
5.5.1.3 The drawn flat steel bar shall be from material grade C45+C (equivalent grades EN 1.0503
and SAE 1045) in accordance with EN ISO 683-1:2018 or E335GC in accordance with EN 10025-2:2019.

load as described in the information supplied by the manufacturer but not less than 100 kg. Attach the
GTFA by means of its connection element to the upper attachment point on the load cell.

the test structure. Observe that the test mass is arrested and record the braking force Fmax. Measure and
record the arrest distance HAD and check with the manufacturer’s instructions and information. If the test
mass, load cell or a connection element (e.g. connector) hits the edge, repeat the test with the smallest
horizontal distance such that only the flexible anchor line strikes the edge.
5.5.3.5 Repeat the test in 5.5.3.1 to 5.5.3.4 with a lateral offset of ( 1 500+50
0 ) mm from the anchor
point, as shown in Figure 11. A new test sample may be used.

of 500 mm in front of the edge.
5.5.4.4 Release the rigid test mass and allow the test mass to come to rest naturally without striking
the test structure. Observe that the test mass is held clear of the ground. If the test mass, GTFA or
connection element (e.g. connector) hits the edge, repeat the test with the smallest horizontal distance
such that only the flexible anchor line strikes the edge.

Annex A
(informative)
This annex provides explanatory information on the key points covered in this edition of the standard
and is intended to provide the reader with background information on the principles used, which form
the basis of this standard.
Table A.1 — Informative explanation of the key points arising from the revision of this standard
Clause/Sub-clause/Figure Rationale
1 Single product The term ‘single product’ has been included in the Scope to ensure that the
GTFA and flexible anchor line are tested and certified together as a single
product ready for use.
3.3 Connection element The concept of using a connection element has been included to cover possible
combinations of lanyard, energy absorber and connectors as a single element.
4.2.1.2 Man-made fibre Man-made fibre has replaced synthetic fibre to extend the range of possible
materials.
4.2.2.4 and 4.2.2.6 Manual To reduce risk for the user new requirements added to check that the GTFA
intervention travels along the anchor line without the need for manual intervention of either
the GTFA or flexible anchor line in both directions in a vertical application.
4.2.2.5 and 4.2.2.7 To aid the user, new requirements added to check that the GTFA travels along
the anchor line for inclined applications in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions and information.
4.2.2.12 Requirement added to cover a deviation device when included as an integral
part of the GTFA including a flexible anchor line.
4.3.3 This requirement is only applicable to man-made fibre ropes as a flexible
anchor line to take into account the ageing effect.
Static strength requirement for a flexible anchor line made from wire rope is
covered in 4.3.2.
4.4.3.1 and 4.4.3.2 Wet Function tests after conditioning to wet and cold for the GTFA including a
condition and cold condition flexible anchor line retained to check locking function under foreseeable
conditions of use. Conditioning to heat is not included as locking performance is
not considered to be affected.
4.4.3.3 Minimum distance Minimum distance requirement included to reflect a foreseeable condition of
use. The test is carried out with the test mass positioned in contact with any
part of the GTFA, including the connection element, to check locking of the GTFA
very close to the anchor line, and to check the arrest distance of the GTFA in this
arrangement.
4.4.3.4 Override function Override function requirement included to reflect a foreseeable condition of
use. Tests are carried out using a 10 kg test mass to check the GTFA locking
function should the user grab the flexible anchor line then strike the top of the
GTFA during a fall.
4.5 Dynamic strength and Dynamic strength and integrity requirement included with the test carried out
integrity using a test mass equivalent to the maximum rated load. This is to check that
the GFTA, including the flexible anchor, has adequate dynamic strength and
integrity.
35
BS EN 353‑2:2024
EN 353-2:2024 (E)
Clause/Sub-clause/Figure Rationale
4.6 Dynamic performance – To reflect potential conditions of use, new requirements for dynamic
inclined and horizontal performance tests included for inclined and horizontal applications. Tests are
applications carried out using a test mass at the maximum rated load to check performance
when used in a horizontal application.
Inclined applications are considered to be covered by testing in a horizontal
arrangement.
4.7 Dynamic strength – To check the dynamic strength of the GTFA and flexible anchor line for inclined
inclined and horizontal and horizontal applications strength tests are carried out using a 2 m free fall
applications distance and a test mass equivalent to the maximum rated load.
To check the integrity of the GTFA and flexible anchor line following the
dynamic strength test, using the same test sample, the test mass is increased to
2 x the maximum rated load for flexible anchor lines made from wire rope and
3 x the maximum rated load for flexible anchor lines made from man-made
fibres.
Inclined applications are considered to be covered by testing in a horizontal
arrangement.
4.9 Marking and information In order to make sure that it is understood that marking and information must
be considered part of the product, compliance with Clauses 6 and 7 is included
in the requirement section of the standard.
5.3.2.8 Dynamic In order to check dynamic performance with a mass suspended on the end of
performance including a the flexible anchor line to replicate the maximum length of the anchor line that
load suspended on the end could be suspended during use.
of the flexible anchor line
6 Marking If the GTFA and flexible anchor line are supplied separately and to ensure the
appropriate product information is provided to the user both the GTFA and
flexible anchor line shall be marked.
Figure 12 For GTFAs that are removable from the flexible anchor line new example
pictograms included to identify the correct flexible anchor line for use with the
GTFA and that are covered by the certification. The booklet pictogram included
to emphasise the need for the user to read the manufacturer’s instructions and
