TOPIC: UNDERSTANDING WORSHIP

THEME VERSE:JOHN 4:24

BY:HADLINE MAKINA.

Worship:It's defined as the act or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity(God)

It's also an act of religious devotion usually directed towards a deity.(God)

Worship involves adoration, praise, Thanksgiving, reverence of God.

From the beginning, man was created by God in order for him to worship God thus worship connects
man to God.

Worship is not about our emotions or feelings towards God but it's more about a recommendation of
who God actually is.

ASPECTS OF WORSHIP

1.Worship is directed to God.(Luke 4:8)

When alone in the wilderness being tempted by the devil,Jesus responded,"It is written;Worship the
Lord your God and serve Him only."

Revelation chapter 4---God alone is worthy to receive glory, honor and power. Not even His angels(Rev
19:10,22:9)

Does your acts of worship ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name?...This should be our standard of
evaluation of the expression of our Worship.

Our worship therefore, whatever form it takes,is to be directed to the throne of God.

2.Worship is focussed on God.(John 17:3)

True worship is focussed on truly knowing God.

N/B:You cannot worship a God you do not know. Therefore, one must know God in order to worship Him.

How do you know God? Through having an intentional, personal, intimate love relationship with
God.This kind of love relationship can only be attained by intentionally spending time in reading the
word of God, meditation and prayer.

Our worship must be directed towards God because of who He is and not just because of what He does
for us.The focus is His worthiness, not His wealthiness.

Some of the best ways to know God and His worthiness are:

I) Spending time to study His names e.g The King of Kings,Elohim,Adonai,Yahweh..etc

2)His attributes e.g God is merciful,God is good,God is supreme and sovereign,God is faithful ,God
loving,God is Kind etc

3.His deeds e.g Healing,provision, defending,creation, clothing etc

His names, attributes and deeds reveals His character and worth.

3.Worship is focussed on the gospel.(1st Cor. 15:3-5)

The gospel of Jesus Christ is of utmost importance---His life, death and resurrection.

Biblical worship has the gospel at it's center. It is a response to the finished work of the cross.(1st Peter
2:24-25)

4.We are to worship God in spirit and in truth.(John 4:23-24)

In truth,God calls is to not only love Him but also to love the truth about Him( 2nd Thessalonians 2:10)

In spirit,we are to pour out our souls to God.

Worshipping God in spirit and truth is a matter of the heart and the mind. Its worship based on a right
understanding of who God is.

5.Worship is a response involving our entire being i.e heart,soul, mind and strength.(Mark 12:30)

We should worship God with all that we have.

6.Worship is a lifestyle.(Romans 12:1)

Worship is not all about singing and expressing our love of God through songs but it's a lifestyle.

Can someone tell that you are a worshiper of God by observing the life you live everyday?

Our everyday lives should demonstrate the acts of love for others in reliance upon God.This makes us
worshipers and it displays the worth of God in us.

N/B: Every believer of Jesus Christ is a worshiper.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF WORSHIP.

1.In everything you do,let God receive the glory.(1st Cor 10:31)

2.Worship is first and foremost for God.Not anyone else;even His angels.(Rev 19:10,22:9).The angels
were also created to worship God.

3.Worship is a dialogue between God and His people,a rhythm of revelation and response.(Psalms 96:4)

4.The word of God must be central in our worship.(Psalms 150:2)

5.Worship is a responsibility of all God's people.It should be a lifestyle.(Rom 12:2, Psalms

79:13.)

6.Our response of worship should be enabled, motivated and empowered by the Holy Spirit.(Phil 3:3)

7.God is much concerned with our heart than with the form of our worship.(Hosea 6:6,Isaiah 29:13)

8.Worship should promote the unity and edification of the body of Christ.(Rom 15:5-6)

Conclusion.

Biblical worship is the praising of God's greatness, goodness and beauty. Its adoring, honoring, revering
and loving God extravagantly anytime, anywhere and in any way because He alone is worthy.
