 The paper contains six items and two sections A and B

A gardener is concerned about the health of their tomato plants, which are showing signs of poor
growth and yellowing of leaves and some leaves have red tips. They suspect an issue with the
plant’s ability to take up, transport and unitize essential nutrients.
Task
a) Identify the essential nutrients that are possible causes of this problem.

Item 3
Malaria has become so common with people living near water bodies. The government has
brought YEKO insecticide to kill mosquitoes but preliminary research shows that YEKO kills
termites, bees and butterflies. The ESIA group, an environment advocacy group has opened up a
campaign against the use of YEKO.
Task
Write an article that you would send to the chief editor to support the campaign of ESIA group
(15 scores)

Item 4
Many farmers practicing farming in hilly areas in Uganda especially in Kigezi regions are facing
many challenges in their farmlands due to increased washing of top soils to low lying areas
especially during rainy seasons. This has greatly affected productivity in such areas.
Task
As a soil scientist, explain to this farmer the likely causes of the above problem. Advise them on
the possible measure that can be used to overcome the above problem.

Part II (choose only one item)


Item 5
In a rural village in west Nile, a mother is concerned about the health of her 2 years old child,
who is malnourished and frequently ill, shortly after weaning him. The family’s daily meal
includes posho and raw vegetable which they eat once a day. The child is energetic but he is not
gaining weight.
Task
a) Explain to the mother why her child is not going weight and suggest recommendations.
b) Describe the different processes that occur in the child’s body to enable him to be energetic.

Item 6
Having been in a company of chain smokers for two years, David a teenager developed dry
cough and serious chest pain and got hospitalized after coughing blood. The medical report
suggested that Daniel was a smoker which he utterly denied and so the doctor put him on serious
medication. During his course of treatment, the doctors discovered that his blood couldn’t load
enough oxygen a reason why he was very weak.
Task
Mention Denial’s health problem and clearly explain how his body contradicted it. Advice
Daniel on how he can recover from the problem discovered.
