SOURCE A
In the end Jinnah was presented with the choice of either an undivided India without any guarantee of the
Muslim share of power at the centre or a sovereign Pakistan carved out of the Muslim majority districts of
Punjab and Bengal. Jinnah’s fears of his followers, his deep mistrust of the Congress high command and the
last Viceroy’s decision to move up the date for the final transfer of power from June 1948 to August 1947, left
him with no alternative but to acquiesce to the creation of a Pakistan shorn of Eastern Punjab and western
Bengal (including Calcutta) – the truncated Pakistan that he had rejected in 1944 and again in 1946.
