Impacts of Lack of Facilities on the Career Development of IBACM Students
Chapter 1
Introduction
It is very evident that having the appropriate learning facilities and materials
undoubtedly affects learning. The subject of school facilities, to be specific, had
received considerable attention from many people, especially educators. Educators in
the Philippines have faced a growing challenge of maintaining the nation’s education
facilities. Shumba & Naong, (2012) clarified that the quality of teaching, student
participation in school activities, school practices and policies, and learning materials for
the students were found to impact career development among learners. It is very clear
that having the availability of appropriate materials and facilities, students have the
opportunity to put themselves under meaningful learning which will lead them to an
effective and significant influence in increasing their career awareness.
Additionally, learning is best when it is facilitated with the availability of complete
learning facilities in school. Brink, Lechner, Loomans, Mobach, and Kort (2024) stated
that when students experienced discomfort, it affects their ability to concentrate, their
emotional status and their quality of learning. These facilities includes well-conducive
classrooms, laboratories equipped with complete apparatus and equipment, libraries
furnished with updated textbooks and reading materials - where these types of facilities
are facilities to support the learning process.
Secondary school is a transition to higher institutions of learning and the world of
work, so it has a critical role in assisting students to choose careers (Baloch & Shah,
2014; Jalala, Latifoğlu, & Uzunboylu, 2020). However, secondary schools, if not
equipped with the facilities necessary for students to be guided in discovering their full
potential, guiding them towards sound career development is arduous. Schneider
(2002) supports that the cognitive requirements for learning and teaching—motivation,
energy, attention, hearing, and seeing - are affected by the physical surroundings where
they take place. Evidently, the quality of a school facility has an impact on students’
experiences and ultimately on their educational achievement especially when school
facilities are clean, in good repair, and designed to support high academic standards.
Background of the Study
Career development is influenced by several factors and the way these factors
interact with one another. However, this study will be focusing to an unfamiliar,
however, important factor that researchers would like to investigate to see if there is a
significant impact on students’ career development – lack of school facilities. Secondary
students are at the critical stage of career decision making process and career
development. So, the researchers have seen the need to study on how the lack of
school facilities affects the students of IBA-CMI on their career development.
IBA-CMI, a school situated in Valencia City, Bukidnon, is one of many schools in
the country which faces problems especially in terms of not having the luxury of enough
facilities to aid the learning of the students. We know that if school facilities are unsafe,
unhealthy and unable to support technology for the delivery of curriculum students are
at dis-advantaged in so many areas.
Statement of the Problem
The problem was that lack of school facilities were negatively impacting student
learning and faculty, and administrators were not properly supporting stronger facility
management. Furthermore, much emphasis was given to the Impacts of the Lack of
Facilities on the Career Development of students of IBA-CMI. This study will focus to
the following questions:
1. What are the impacts of lack of facilities to the career development of the students of
IBA-CMI?
2. How can lack of Facilities impacts students’ career development?
Objectives of the Study
Significantly, the aim of this is to investigate whether or not the lack of school facilities
has a negative or positive impact on the career development of IBA-CMI students. It
specifically aims to:
1. Determine the impacts of the lack of facilities on students’ career development.
2. Investigate if the lack of school facilities has certain relevance on students’ career
development.
3. Identify the different interventions to manage the impacts of school’s lack of facilities
towards students’ career development.
Significance of the Study
The results of this study will benefit the following:
Students – students will be guided to put extra time on learning and utilize the
availability of resources and facilities necessary to discover their potentials and be
guided on their career development.
Educators – they will be motivated to come up with several remedies to guide students
on their career development given the problem on lack of facilities in the school.
Administrators – the conducted study will open doors for the administrators to find ways
to support the schools so students are provided with well-equipped instructions aided by
appropriate facilities.
Future Researchers – this study will give light for future researchers to conduct further
students focusing on the problems related to lack of facilities and career development.
Scope and Delimitation
The scope of the study is only on finding the impacts of the lack of school
facilities to students’ career development. The study focuses only on lack of facilities
and its significant impacts on students’ career development and will not include other
factors. The study is delimited only for the Junior and Senior high school students
officially enrolled in IBA-CMI – Basic Education Department, situated in Purok 21,
Poblacion, Valencia City, Bukidnon.
The study will only utilize Simple Random sampling as the sampling technique in
determining 50 Junior High and Senior high school students as the respondents of the
study. In conducting the study, a questionnaire will be given to the respondents as the
main method to collect primary data.
Other students enrolled in other year level shall not be included in the study as
the type of research conducted needs relevance and familiarity of the problem.
