SECTION B
Questions 51 to 55 carry 10 marks each
51. Read the passage below carefully and answer, in full sentences,
the questions that follow.
It was evening time at around 6:00 p.m. The sun had disappeared beyond a
thick forest beside the road that took us to our home. We had walked from
school to go back home and were too tired even to carry our own books. We
were right because it was a long way from school to our home.
Despite the long distance, Henry and I was determined to read and become a
lawyer and a doctor. Henry wanted to become a lawyer while I liked being a
medical doctor. Due to these ambitions, we persevered through the sharp
stones, heavy rain, scorching sunshine and above all, the long distance!
Half a kilometer away from home, we met a strange person. This man looked
strange because I could hardly see his face clearly. He was short, carrying a
bald head. I noticed patches of grey hair which was scanty in the sides of his
head. He had a few fingers on both hands. The visible parts of his body were
full of scars! He suddenly stopped us as we trotted past him. I did not want to
stop and talk to him but Henry did.
“Can you show me the way to Mr.Mukasa’s home?” he asked. I did not want
Henry to direct him to my father’s home but he did. I got annoyed because I
didn’t know what the man wanted from my father.

After Henryhad directed the stranger to our home, we ran very fast till we
reached. No sooner had I changed from my dress, than the visitor arrived. It
was the stranger being given a warm welcome. Immediately my father called
me to come and greet Mr.Kaye – the stranger. After greeting him, my father
narrated a short story to me.

4
He said that when I was a five months old baby girl, the house I was sleeping
in caught fire. Mr.Kaye who was passing by saw thick huge smoke and flames
of fire piercing through the roof. When he came nearer the house, he heard the
cries of a baby inside. He courageously dashed inside the burning house and
picked out the suffocating baby. Although Mr.Kaye saved the baby from fire, he
sustained serious burns on the head back and hands. He lost his hair on the
head and some fingers were cut off due to the burns. My father said, “The baby
who Mr.Kaye saved is you‼”

After that story, I went and hugged Mr.Kaye and thanked him for saving my
life and for sacrificing his life to save mine. I swore to respect all kinds of
people I find. Finally, I repented to God of my misbehavour.
