Praise for Strange Electromagnetic Dimensions
“In a fascinating book, one that covers such issues as (a) the
connections between lightning strikes and psychic phenomena; (b)
animals that hunt in the infrared range; (c) how electricity can
adversely affect human health; and (d) the mysteries of magnetic fields,
Louis Proud takes us on an amazing journey into the mysterious heart
of the electromagnetic spectrum.”
—Nick Redfern, author of Close Encounters of the Fatal Kind

“Proud opens up questions that need to be asked, in this new book. He

reminds us that most of the natural world is invisible to us and we can
be quite startled when the invisible becomes visible. What doors are we
opening, without knowing it? Controversial and provocative—a book
that needed to be written.”
—John Shirley, author of Gurdjieff

“Strange Electromagnetic Dimensions examines the physiological,

environmental, and often paranormal influences and effects caused by
electricity and electromagnetic energy in this well-researched and
thoughtful book. From the mysterious nature of lightning to the more
complex relationship between the brain and EM field anomalies that
may trigger poltergeist activity, Louis Proud delves into the world of
electrical influences we take for granted, yet may be altering our
experience of reality. An intriguing book that balances scientific
research with enigmatic inquiries into quantum fields, parapsychology,
and the body electric.”
—Marie D. Jones, author of The Resonance Key and PSIence

“Louis Proud’s Strange Electromagnetic Dimensions is a detailed look

at the importance of electromagnetic radiation with respect to a wide
panorama of biological life and human experiences. From the
significance of earth’s magnetic field, to cellular processes, to the
dangers of smart meters, to the world of unexplained psychic
experiences, Proud takes us on a journey that is both timely and well-
researched. A wide-reaching overview of our vital, invisible
electromagnetic world.”

About the Author

Introduction

I’m writing this on a computer connected to the internet by means of a

wireless modem. The ceiling fan above me is rotating softly, keeping the
edge off the heat. Mounted on the wall to my right is a compact fluorescent
lamp, its bluish-white glow illuminating the room. A cellphone rests on the
edge of the bookcase. Each of these devices—and many others in my home
—emit electromagnetic (EM) radiation within a certain portion, in some
cases multiple portions, of the EM spectrum.
Just as ancient man learned to harness fire, using it to cook food,
provide lighting, and keep warm, so did modern man learn to harness EM
energy. Today we cook our food in electric ovens, use electric lights, and
heat our homes with electric heaters. We live in an age of EM wizardry, the
limits of which seem endless.
Most of us take electricity and its attendant technology for granted, only
realizing how much we depend on such things as electric lights on those
rare occasions when there’s a power outage or when we go on a camping
trip. As someone who spent a significant portion of their upbringing in a
home without mains electricity—we lacked the funds required to have it
connected—I have some understanding of the difficulties of living without
it.
We used candles and kerosene lanterns in place of electric lights and a
wood stove in place of an electric stove. No electricity meant no hot water
from the tap. Having a warm bath required heating the water on the stove.
Later, we purchased an old chip heater (named as such because it ran on
wood chips) to produce hot water for baths. I ironed my shirts for school
using an antique iron made from heavy cast iron. The idea was to place this
on the top of the stove until it had reached the desired temperature. My
grandmother became nostalgic whenever she came to stay with us,
commenting on how our primitive lifestyle reminded her of her upbringing
in 1920/30s rural South Australia.
The use of electricity on a large scale is a fairly new development in the
history of humanity, having only really started in the 20th century with the
establishment of power stations and electricity grids. “The experience of
living or working in artificial electromagnetic fields superimposed upon the
natural background electromagnetic environment is, in evolutionary terms,
extremely new to humans—perhaps no more than 40–50 years old as far as
industrial and domestic exposure is concerned,” explain Cyril Smith and
Simon Best.1 Considering these words were written in 1989, roughly 25
years ago, it would be more accurate to say that humanity’s exposure to
artificial EM fields has been going on for 65 to 75 years. This, nonetheless,
is a very brief period of time.
It’s fascinating to realize that the environment in which my grandmother
lived during her formative years was relatively free of artificial EM fields,
whereas today the opposite is true for the majority of humanity (including
for my grandmother, who nowadays resides in a house in the city).
In this book we’ll take a look at the many and varied ways exposure to
artificial EM fields has affected, and is affecting, both humanity and the
world we inhabit, not only in relation to matters of health and well-being
but also in relation to matters of a paranormal nature. By “paranormal” I
mean those things not currently understandable in terms of known scientific
laws and phenomenon. Years of research have opened my eyes to the fact
that just about every phenomenon deemed paranormal, from poltergeistry to
UFOs, possesses an EM dimension—hence the title of this book.
It’s no coincidence that many of the world’s most significant
paranormal movements and manifestations came about during the period
from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century—for example, the
modern spiritualist movement in 1848 and the modern UFO era in 1947—at
the same time humanity began to alter, in a way never before seen, the EM
nature of the environment with the invention of electric telegraphy,
telephony, radio, radar, television, and large-scale power generation and
distribution, rendering the planet abuzz with new and exotic energies. As
our use of technology continues to expand, and as new technologies come
into being, we’re pushing further and further into the EM spectrum,
invading what was previously unoccupied.
Although it’s true that many of the topics dealt with in this book are
strange and controversial, I’ve tried to employ, as best I can, a down-to-
earth approach and to back up my findings with scientific evidence. If
you’re after a purely sensational book filled with dubious stories of crashed
alien saucers and the like, I suggest you read no further. When, as a
teenager, I first became interested in paranormal matters, my appetite for
such stories was immense and I accepted at face value much of what I read.
Now older and (hopefully) more mature, I’m better able to appreciate the
real mysteries, those that have some basis in fact and are open to scientific
study.
How, for example, do balls of lightning pass straight through walls and
panes of glass without hindrance? How does a single ball of lightning split
into two or more smaller balls, each floating off in a different direction?
What are we to make of cases where the object observed clearly exhibited a
rudimentary form of intelligence, such as by carefully exploring a person’s
bedroom before exiting via the window it entered?
The topic of lightning occupies an important place in this book. In fact,
my original aim when planning this project was to write exclusively about
lightning, paying particular attention to cases where people had been struck
by lightning and lived to tell the tale. I was amazed to learn that a small yet
not insignificant percentage of lightning strike survivors had been struck by
lightning not once but two or three times (in some cases more), as though
possessed of the ability to draw lightning from the sky, albeit
unintentionally. I wanted to learn more about these “human lightning rods”
and, if possible, shed some light on their strange affinity with this powerful
and spectacular natural force.
I soon became aware of additional anomalies in connection with
lightning strike survivors. For example, it’s not uncommon for survivors to
claim that electrical devices repeatedly malfunction in their presence for no
apparent reason, the problem having started after they were struck by
lightning. Evidence suggests that being struck by lightning, though
generally harmful, even deadly, can alter the body in such a way as to
endow the person concerned with some very strange abilities. Discussed in
this book are a number of cases of lightning strike survivors who have gone
on to become psychics and shamans.
Being struck by lightning is not that far removed from receiving a
severe electric shock. Indeed, lightning strike victims and electric shock
victims very much belong in the same category, with similar injuries and
effects experienced by both. If you gathered together a group of genuine
psychics you’d find that a notable percentage of the group were either
struck by lightning (directly or indirectly) at a young age, or, more likely,
suffered at a young age a severe electric shock.
In the preface to Matthew Manning’s first book, The Link, the British
publisher Peter Bander comments on a study conducted by Dr. Joel
Whitton, a Canadian psychiatrist, on a group of well-known psychics. The
study found that several of the psychics “had all suffered a severe electric
shock before the age of ten.”2 Bander was curious to know if the same was
true of Manning. He discovered that Manning’s mother had suffered a
severe electric shock three weeks before giving birth to him, even fearing
that she might lose him. Manning’s innumerable psychic abilities, which
include affecting electrical equipment and moving compass needles, have
been studied by scientists and found to be most likely genuine. Today he’s a
world famous healer.
Of course, one needn’t be an accomplished psychic to affect electrical
equipment in strange ways. Plenty of “average Joes” claim this ability,
particularly with respect to streetlamps. The latter phenomenon, called
streetlamp interference (SLI), is surprisingly common. In a typical SLI
incident, one or more streetlamps will suddenly blink out when approached,
only to suddenly blink on again the moment the individual steps away. I
discuss SLI in Chapter 6 and demonstrate that not all incidents of SLI can
be attributed to coincidence and other mundane factors.
Other topics dealt with in this book include poltergeistry, psychokinesis
(PK), UFOs, electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), high voltage
syndrome (HVS), animal and human magnetoception, and the relationship
between geomagnetic disturbances and human health. These phenomena,
when examined deeply and in relation to each other, raise a multitude of
intriguing questions as to the function of electricity within the human body.
If this book has one main purpose, it is to illustrate the profound extent to
which EM processes apply to human beings and to the reality we
collectively inhabit.

The electromagnetic spectrum

What we perceive with our eyes is but a tiny fraction of reality. This tiny
fraction of reality—what’s known as visible light—occupies less than one
percent of the EM spectrum. The EM spectrum is the range of wavelengths
over which EM radiation extends. What we refer to as “light” is simply that
portion of the EM spectrum that the human eye can detect, ranging from
violet (with a wavelength of 400 nanometers [nm]) at one end to red (with a
wavelength of 700 nm) at the other end. We only have to look at a rainbow
in the sky, or see light pass through a prism, to know that the colors
between violet and red consist of indigo, blue, green, yellow, and orange.
This gives us a total of seven colors, each with its own wavelength.

Often we use the terms “ultraviolet” and “infrared” without truly

knowing what they mean. Of course, the human eye cannot perceive either,
