ASSIGNMENT Eight

STUDENT NAME

FEEDBACK AND REFLECTION:

฀ I have read the feedback on my last assignment carefully.

฀ I have considered whether any of that feedback is relevant to this assignment.

One thing I will try to do either the same or differently in this assignment as a result of my previous
feedback is: _______________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE:

 You should complete this assignment by carrying out Practical 3: Corrosion on this sheet and
then handwriting in black ink both the Practical 3: Corrosion and the assignment questions that
follow on, unless you have obtained specific permission through your SPM to submit typed work.
Then scan it in and submit it, as a single document.

 This is not a timed assignment. We estimate that this assignment may take you between 1 and 2
hours for the practical, and between 40 and 60 minutes for the assignment itself. However, if you
need to take longer, then please do so.

 Make sure you write your full name clearly in the box at the top of this page.

 In order to complete this assignment, you will need a calculator, ruler, your coursebook and
notes.
LS SCIENCE YEAR 9 ASSIGNMENT 08

LS Science Assignment Eight

PRACTICAL: CORROSION

What conditions affect rusting the most?

You may have learned in Module 5 of Year 8 about the conditions needed for the rusting of iron,
specifically the need for both water and oxygen. In this practical you will investigate what conditions
cause iron to rust the most, and what conditions are best at preventing iron from rusting.

Apparatus

 Iron nails – make sure they are definitely iron, and not galvanized
 Polystyrene cups or some other vessel to hold the nails
 Oil
 Petroleum jelly, or Vaseline

Method

You should design your own experiment for this practical. You should think about the following: (you
can fill in the answers in Question 1, Variables too)

 What is your independent variable? (Hint: this is one you will not be able to measure
like you usually would.)

 What is your dependent variable and how will you measure it?

 What other variables should be controlled to make your method more valid? How will
you control them?

 How will you make sure your results are reliable?

 Prediction: what do you think will happen?

Here are some recommendations for how to treat the nails, although you can choose your own way.

 Iron nail in air

 Iron nail in water
 Iron nail in boiled water with a layer of oil on the top (this excludes oxygen)
 Iron nail in salt water
 Iron nail coated in petroleum jelly in water

1. This question covers the practical.

a. What is your independent variable?

(Hint: this is one you will not be able to measure like you usually would.)

3. Gary wanted to find out if some food colourings contained a banned food dye. He put a drop of
each food colouring and the banned food dye onto some special paper. He hung the paper in a
beaker of water.

After 10 minutes, the banned food dye and some of the dyes from the food colourings had
moved up the paper. Gary’s results are shown below.

a. Gary wrote the labels on the paper in pencil. Why should he not write them in ink?
