Project Overview:
ShelfSync is a cloud-native bookstore management system
developed to address the limitations of traditional bookstore models
by leveraging modern frontend frameworks and serverless cloud
infrastructure. Built using Vite and React for the frontend and AWS
serverless technologies for the backend, ShelfSync is designed to
provide a seamless, scalable, and cost-effective digital shopping
experience.
The platform enables users to browse books, place orders, receive
email confirmations, and download receipts entirely through a web
interface, without the need for a traditional backend server. By
integrating cloud services such as AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, and SNS,
ShelfSync ensures high availability, low latency, and excellent
performance under varying loads.
Objectives:
• Scalability: Automatically handle increasing user demands
using serverless technologies.
• Cost Efficiency: Use AWS’s pay-as-you-go model to minimize
hosting and infrastructure costs.
• Security: Implement secure and trusted Google OAuth for user
authentication.
• Automation: Leverage AWS Lambda and SNS to automate order
confirmation and communication.
• Performance: Achieve fast and smooth interaction using
modern Vite + React frontend tooling.
• Modularity: Design system components to be independently
scalable and maintainable.
Technologies Used:

Methodology:
ShelfSync followed the Agile Software Development Life Cycle
(SDLC) using Scrum methodology. Weekly sprints were organized to
progressively develop core modules such as login, book listing,
ordering, and receipt generation.
Key steps in methodology:
• Sprint Planning: Weekly feature targets and risk management
planning.
• CI/CD Pipeline: Automated deployment using AWS Amplify.
• Feedback Loops: Regular internal testing and updates.
• Risk Handling: Focused efforts on solving cold starts, SNS
delivery failures, IAM configuration issues.
By following Agile principles, development was modular, flexible, and
continuously aligned with project goals.
System Architecture:
The application architecture uses AWS’s serverless infrastructure for
backend functionality and React for a highly responsive frontend.
Key Components:
1. Frontend (React + Vite) – Handles user interface and
interaction.
2. Backend (AWS Lambda) – Manages business logic and order
processing.
3. Database (AWS DynamoDB) – Stores user and order records
securely.
4. Notification System (AWS SNS) – Sends real-time email
confirmations.
5. Authentication (Google OAuth) – Provides a secure and
seamless login.
Order Workflow:
1. User logs in via Google Sign-In.
2. Books are displayed dynamically from a JSON file.
3. User selects a book and places an order.
4. Lambda function processes the order logic.
5. Order data is stored in DynamoDB.
6. SNS sends an email notification with order details.
7. User downloads receipt directly from the frontend.
This workflow ensures speed, reliability, and automation in each
transaction.
Key Results and Features:
• Secure Authentication: Google OAuth enables safe and fast
user login.
• Real-Time Notifications: Orders trigger email confirmations via
AWS SNS.
• Dynamic Book Listings: Book data is served from a JSON source
for easy updates.
• Fast Serverless Execution: Lambda functions provide low-
latency responses.
• Database Reliability: DynamoDB ensures fast, fault-tolerant
storage.
• User-Friendly Interface: Modern UI with responsive design
using React and Vite.
Comparative Insights:
• Serverless vs. Traditional Hosting: Serverless significantly
reduces maintenance and improves scalability.
• AWS Ecosystem Benefits: Tight integration between Lambda,
DynamoDB, and SNS improves reliability and developer
productivity.
• Client-Side Performance: Vite boosts frontend performance
and simplifies development.
Performance tests showed strong uptime, minimal latency, and a
smooth user experience across devices.
Conclusion:
ShelfSync successfully demonstrates how modern serverless
architecture and frontend frameworks can be integrated to build
scalable and efficient web applications. By removing backend
infrastructure concerns, it allows developers to focus on delivering
business logic and user experience. ShelfSync provides a fast, secure,
and feature-rich platform ideal for small to medium-scale online
retail systems.
Future Enhancements:
• Integrate Payment Gateways: Add Stripe or Razorpay for online
transactions.
• Admin Panel: Create a dashboard for managing books and
orders.
• Search and Filtering: Add advanced features for book discovery.
• Real-Time Tracking: Notify users of order status changes.
• Mobile Application: Build native Android/iOS apps for broader
accessibility.
Applications:
• E-Commerce Bookstores: Full-featured platform for selling
books online.
• Campus Bookshops: Managing book inventory and orders for
students and faculty.
• Local Retailers: Ideal for stores wanting to go digital without
complex setup.
• NGO Book Distribution: Helps nonprofits track and manage
educational book distribution programs.
